Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has a simple shower tip that could shave £70 off your energy bill.
Anxiety has struck British homeowners after Ofgem announced it was lifting the cap on tariffs to £1,971, raising the maximum rate energy suppliers can charge for an average dual-fuel energy tariff by £693.
Ever since the news emerged, emails and letters have slowly trickled through letterboxes across the UK informing people just how much heavier their bills will feel going forward (for me, it's an extra £45 a month for electricity).

Now is the time to work smarter, not harder, when it comes to cutting back. According to Lewis, the first place we should be looking is our hot water.
"Bizarrely, one way to save on your energy bills is to use less water, because much of the water we use in our home has been heated, so we pay for it to be heated," Lewis said at the Ideal Home Show, as per The Sun.
Think about it: many flats and homes have electric boilers these days, so your hot water usage will vastly impact your bill at the end of the month.

In fact, showering actually accounts for a quarter of household water use, with 25% of the average energy bill going on heating water alone.
Thankfully, for those who like a long shower in the morning, there's easy things you can do.
"There’s a website called savemoneysavewater.co.uk which collates all the freebies available from the water companies around the country, such as £30 aerated shower heads, which you can get for free," Lewis continued.

"What that does is you can feel the same shower pressure but you’re actually using far less water to do it."
If you go to the above website, you'll be asked to enter your postcode, which will then re-direct you to another site where you fill in a short questionnaire to check your eligibility for free products.
"It’s worth checking out, go grab yourself a freebie, save on your water – good if you’re on a water bill – and save on your energy because you’re paying to heat less water," Lewis added.
Lewis also issued some important advice on TikTok ahead of the price increases. To those paying their bill via direct debit, he said: "I would suggest you do a meter reading today and diarise to do a meter reading on March 31.

"This is so you can draw a line and tell the energy company this energy that I have used should be at the cheaper rate."
