Elon Musk and partner Grimes have changed their child's name.

The baby was originally called X Æ A-12, which is fairly out there, but the couple has had to change it to something more mainstream as it doesn't comply with Californian law.

According to state legislation, people cannot have Indo-Arabic numerals in their names, so the singer and the billionaire couple changed it to... X Æ A-Xii.

Grimes, real name Claire Elise Boucher, confirmed the news on her Instagram account after a fan asked: "Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws? What is the baby's new name?"

The Canadian popstar replied: "X Æ A-Xii."

Another fan then commented: "Nice! Just removed the numbers to confirm [sic] to California law."

Grimes then wrote: "Roman numerals. Looks better tbh."

The fan who posed the original question then explained: "You aren't allowed to have numbers in your name so she replaced the numbers with Roman numerals."

Before Grimes returned, adding: "One dash is allowed."

Explaining why the couple were unable to name their child as they had originally wished, family attorney David Glass told People: "In California, you can only use the 26 characters of the English language in your baby name.

"Thus, you can't have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like 'O'Connor,' is acceptable.

"They have an opportunity to appeal the rejection of the birth certificate application but it's unlikely that it will be granted because, again, California... has been struggling with using symbols."

Prior to the alteration, Grimes took to social media to explain the rationalisation behind their decision.

She wrote: "Æ is the the Elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).

"A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favourite aircraft). No weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent. (A=Archangel, my favorite song)."

Speaking to Joe Rogan, Musk also said: "First of all, my partner is the one who, mostly, actually came up with the name. I mean it's just X, the letter X. And then the Æ is, like, pronounced 'ash'... yeah... and then A-12 is my contribution."
