A woman got the shock of her life when she opened her toilet door to see a burglar drinking coffee and having a poo.

The sleepy woman, named only as Olesja, from Windeck in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, had got up to use the bathroom when she was confronted by the intruder.

Startled by the interruption, the man quickly pulled up his pants and made a break for it.

According to reports, the thief walked past the 36-year-old woman and into the living room where he grabbed his bag full of items he had already stolen and then climbed out of the window of her home and legged it.

The break-in was caught on CCTV cameras installed in the house, with images showing burglar searching the house for items to steal.

The woman was surprised when she was faced with the thief.

Probably due to the fact she was so stunned by what she had seen, the woman wasn't even able to call for her husband Steffen, who was still sleeping upstairs, before the intruder made his escape.

Local police have now launched an appeal for help in tracking the man down.

Authorities have described him as being between 25 to 30 years old, around 1.75 metres tall, and as having a North African appearance, with dark hair and a dark complexion.

He was also wearing Adidas trainers.

Steffen, 39, also believes he may have bumped into the elusive thief at the train station on his way back from work, suspecting that he was on the look out for a new target.

And after calling his wife, who agreed that it seemed to be the same man, they raised the alarm with police.

The entire burglary was caught on camera.

However, he again managed to escape before he could be apprehended, and an investigation into the bizarre case is ongoing.

In other strange theft news, a cop recently claimed his force nabbed the 'world's unluckiest burglars' - after the suspects accidentally 'butt-dialled' 999 during their alleged break-in.

Chief Inspector John Owen of Staffordshire Police said officers were alerted to a break-in on Wednesday night (6 January) after the suspect accidentally called police.

CI Owen claims members of the force were able to sit and listen to their 'antics' - even hearing their own sirens arrive outside.

The copper, who likened the perpetrators to Home Alone's Wet Bandits, shared the tweet to his 2,900 followers - with the news entertaining social media users and quickly going viral.

CI Owen wrote: "I think we just arrested the world's unluckiest burglars.

"While committing a burglary, one of the bungling burglars accidentally sat on his phone and dialled 999."
