Seth Rogen responds to backlash after saying Superbad was 'last good high school movie'

Seth Rogen has spoken out after facing a divided response for saying there've been no 'good High School' movies since Superbad

Seth Rogen has spoken out after facing a divided response for saying there've been no 'good high school' movies since Superbad.

It's a big claim, although Superbad is a banger of teen comedy and the 2007 movie was scientifically branded the 'funniest film of all time' and took a whopping $170.8 million (£141.7 m) at the box office, making it one of the highest-earning comedy films of the 2000s, after all.

However, not all high school movie genre fans were best pleased when the 40-year-old filmmaker, actor and comedian said 'no one's made a good high school movie' since Superbad.

As Superbad's Seth (Jonah Hill) said: "People don't forget" so it's just as well Rogen has since responded to some of the criticism and clarified a few things.

First things first, Rogen explained his statement was 'a joke'.

He told People: "There's a lot. I've personally made a few [films]. Obviously there have been many."

Indeed, Rogen has made 'a few' including the likes of 21 Jump Street (2012) and Good Boys (2019).

Rogen's clarification comes after he previously told People his The Fabelman co-star Gabe LaBelle's favourite film is Superbad.

The 40-year-old said: "What's crazy is that Gabe LaBelle is like, 19 years old and his and his friends' favourite movie is Superbad.

"So it never changed for some reason. No one's made a good high school movie since then."

Despite the widespread popularity of Superbad - which Rogen co-wrote alongside Evan Goldberg - film fans flooded to social media in debate over Rogen's statement.

One said: "I mean... Project X, The Duff, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Easy A, and Edge of Seventeen are all vastly superior to Superbad but go off I guess."

"Project X is an absolute masterpiece," another echoed.

A third wrote: "Another one — staten island summer produced by lorne michaels, severely underrated."

A fourth said: "Booksmart eats Superbad up in every conceivable way."

Film lovers pointed out other high school comedies which have been hits since 'Superbad' was released.

However, others thoroughly agreed with Rogen - even though he was joking.

A user commented: "Unfortunately Superbad is the greatest high school movie of all time and will never be trumped."

"None of those movies you listed are better when it comes to replay value. You can watch superbad over and over again and it's always good. Easy A does have some replay value too, but it's not as good. The others, while good, don't have much replay value. Superbad wins," another said.

A final resolved: "All of those movies are worse, get real. Also, he was joking if you bothered to read the interview."
