Keir Starmer’s stance confirmed on whether UK will get bank holiday after Lionesses' win

England defended their Euros title after beating Spain on penalties on Sunday (27 July)

You'll be wondering if a bank holiday will be on the cards after the Lionesses made the country proud yet again by managing to retain their Euros title.

England defended their trophy after beating Spain on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday (27 July).

Spain's Mariona Caldentey scored the opening goal in the 25th minute before Alessia Russo equalised in the second half.

And then it was none other than Euro 2022 hero Chloe Kelly who scored the winning penalty, with two big saves from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

It became the first time an England team has won a major trophy on foreign soil, and Sir Keir Starmer was quick to congratulate England on their Euro 2025 win, writing on X: “Champions! Congratulations Lionesses – what a team. What a game. What drama.

“You dug deep when it mattered most and you’ve made the nation proud. History makers.”

Well, prior to the match, Starmer's spokesperson admitted that there were 'no plans' for an extra bank holiday if England won the Euros.

It came as a surprise after the Prime Minister was strongly considering one a couple years ago before the England women's team lost out to Spain in the World Cup final.

"It’s almost 60 years since England won the World Cup," he wrote at the time on X. "I’m never complacent about anything… but there should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home."

Then before the men's Euros final loss last summer, he insisted that he didn't 'want to jinx it' with regards to announcing a bank holiday.

Although, he did admit that 'we should certainly mark the occasion' if we won.

Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock are set to host a trophy-winning reception at Downing Street after Starmer said the team had 'once again captured the hearts of the nation'.

Number 10 said players, coaches and FA representatives are to attend the Downing Street reception on Monday (28 July).

“Their victory is not only a remarkable sporting achievement, but an inspiration for young people across the country,” Starmer said.

“It stands as a testament to the determination, resilience and unity that define this outstanding team.

“I’m delighted that the squad will be welcomed into Downing Street as the whole country marks this historic win and the lasting impact they are creating for the future of the game.”
