Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been asked whether he will grant an extra bank holiday if England win the World Cup.

England kick-off their campaign to end 60 years of hurt and finally win the World Cup on Wednesday when they take on old foes Croatia in Dallas' AT&T Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel's squad has been hit with injury ahead of the opener, with Tino Livramento ruled out of the tournament, but spirits remain high in Texas, with England fans spotted partying in cowboy hats and attending a rodeo.

The Three Lions are among the favourites to win the tournament behind France and Spain, though Argentina announced themselves as contenders with a Lionel Messi hat-trick against Algeria.

England fans have been warned not to sing disparaging chants against Sir Keir Starmer during Wednesday's game, but the Prime Minister is looking forward to seeing a 'great' squad finally take to the field.

Starmer has even given a glimmer of hope that a bank holiday could be on the horizon should England win the trophy.

Keir Starmer doesn't rule out bank holiday if England win the World Cup

UK citizens get eight public bank holidays a year already but there has often been calls for another one to be added if England ever win the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

When asked during the G7 summit in Evian if he would grant an extra Bank Holiday in the event of England's triumph, Starmer certainly didn't rule it out.

“I’m not going to jinx the World Cup,” he said, via The Sun. “But, you know, the last time we won the World Cup it was a Labour government.

“And so it’s absolutely clear that we only win World Cups under a Labour government.

“So let’s hope that this is the next opportunity."

Turning to Tuchel's team, Starmer expressed his excitement for the game.

He added: “He’s got a great squad. This is going to be a good game tonight, probably the hardest in the group games this evening.

“So we’re looking forward to seeing the starting lineup what it’s going to be.

“And don’t take it that the lineups in the friendlies are going to be the starting lineup for tonight.”

Scotland enjoyed an extra Bank Holiday on June 15 after they played their first World Cup match since 1998 in the early hours of Sunday morning, beating Haiti 1-0.
