Two England players missing from training days before final World Cup group game

Two of England's most important players sat out of training ahead of the final World Cup group game with Panama, sparking injury fears.

England are looking to bounce back from a dull goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday when they face off against Panama on Saturday, a win in which will see them finish in top spot in Group L and finalise their path in the knock-out stages.

The Three Lions smashed Panama 6-1 when they met in the group stage in the 2018 World Cup, but the Central American nation look to have improved in the years since and have only been narrowly defeated 1-0 by Ghana and Croatia in their two matches so far.

As a result, Panama are already eliminated from the tournament but will still be eyeing a sensational upset in New Jersey, one which would put a serious dent in England's trophy hopes, as not finishing top would mean a much tougher game in the last-32.

It's not been ideal preparation for England, either, as key duo Reece James and Declan Rice both missed training on Thursday.

England are getting ready for their next game in their Kansas City training base, but Thomas Tuchel had to conduct training without two of his guaranteed starters.

The Sun reports that James, who has struggled with injuries in recent years, tweaked his hamstring in the stalemate with Ghana.

As a result, James is a doubt for the clash and could be replaced at right-back by either Djed Spence or Jarell Quansah, with Nico O'Reilly coming in at left-back.

However, there is not as much concern around Rice's fitness and it's reported he is fit to start on Saturday if required.

The Arsenal midfielder was spotted limping after the opening game vs Croatia and was wearing strapping on his left calf following Ghana, though he is said to only have suffered a dead leg.

It's not yet clear if Tuchel will rotate his side for Panama, ranked 42nd in the FIFA world rankings, with qualification already secured, or name another strong starting XI to ensure top spot is nailed down.

Rice picked up a booking against Ghana, so would be suspended for the first knock-out match if he got another yellow card.

England will train again on Friday before travelling to the game.
