Stephen Mulhern has broken his silence on his TV absence, saying it’s on ‘doctors orders’ and that he’s ‘on the mend’.

The 44-year-old presenter is a mainstay on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, so when he didn’t appear on the past two episodes of the ITV show, viewers were left worried.

However, he’s since taken to Twitter to reassure fans that he’s doing okay but will have to miss this weekend’s episode while he gets better.

In a series of tweets shared today (12 March) he said: “Hello all, Sorry I’ve been quiet on here recently and thank you for all your lovely messages. I’ve had some time off and been resting up on doctors orders.

“I’m on the mend, I’m happy to say, and looking forward to getting back to work soon.

"In the meantime, I’ll put my feet up and watch Saturday Night Takeaway tonight with the rest of you lot.

“Please don’t miss me too much! Lots of love, Stephen. X.”

Fans flooded the reply section with one user writing: "Please look after yourself!

"Hope you feel better and ready to work again soon but please don’t rush back if you’re not."

A second added: "Hope your okay Stephen, lots of love xx [sic].

A third said: "Get well soon x you are missed on TV x but make sure you are 100%."

Another commented: "Hi Stephen, I am glad to hear that you are on the mend.

"I hope you are feeling better soon, have plenty of rest and take care x."

Someone else wrote: "We’ve missed your special brand of humour, but are pleased you are taking doctors orders seriously and resting up.

"Sending healing hugs."

The synopsis for the show reads: "Hosts Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly present hilarious sketches on various issues, interact with celebrity guests and invite the audience members to play games."

The series features the likes of Jordan North, Andi Peters, Fleur East, Stephen Mulhern, Scarlett Moffatt, Ashley Roberts and Kirsty Gallacher.

Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway returns tonight (March 12) at 7pm on ITV.
