An optical illusion has supposedly revealed what it feels like to hallucinate.

If you haven't had the pleasure of being dosed up on medicine in the hospital to suddenly wake from your slumber to see what you think is a cartoon character, animal or whatever else hovers in your hallucinations, then fear not.

A clip shared to YouTube claims to have exposed just what it feels like to trip out on psychedelic drugs without the hassle and illegality of actually having to consume them.

User DrDIYhax shared the video, titled: "ACID Type Visual Hallucination Optical Illusion #2," alongside a caption that reads: "You all asked for a #2 and here it is ! I call this RED ACID.

"This video will give a full visual hallucination that slightly resembles an acid /lsd trip. if you do not want to experience visual hallucinations please do not watch."

The video has amassed more than 50,000 views, with viewers having flocked to the comments to compare what they saw.

One user said: "Dude, definitely saw similar visuals to a shroom trip, albeit very, very mild. Almost like I was done tripping but still see some residual movement. Great video btw."

However, another was left unconvinced: "At first just one dot, then it seemed to split into two and they drifted apart, one left, then one right. Made the room a bit fuzzy for about 30 second afterwards. Not exactly lsd level, but still fun."

A third decided the illusion wasn't enough and so recommended dosing up on actual psychedelics to get an even more realistic experience.

"I def recommend watching these while under the influence of mushrooms, did a bunch when I was younger and God did the world come alive!

"I didn't want a permanent change but seeing everything around me in a altered experience due to really, really good shrooms that were so clean and pure as a high was awesome," they said.

The optical illusion received a divided response from viewers.

A final person left the user who posted the video completely baffled.

They wrote: "I have my grandmas ern of ashes up on my fire place and i looked at it after watching this and it looked like it was dancing [sic]."

DrDIYhax replied: "I will be honest I don't know what to say to that."
