Draco Malfoy Only On Camera In Harry Potter For 31 Minutes

Draco Malfoy Only On Camera In Harry Potter For 31 Minutes

That Draco Malfoy eh? Harry Potter's famous school nemesis in both the books and films was there at Harry Potter's every turn, making his life a misery and not giving the famous wizard a moment's respite.

Except that in the films it turns out he wasn't.

Several Potterheads on social media have commented on a shock discovery from film info vault IMDB, that suggests the Tom Felton-portrayed character appeared on-screen in the Harry Potter film series for a mere 31 minutes. 31 minutes!

That's barely enough time to construct and execute one elaborate prank with Crabbe and Goyle, never mind a school career's worth.

To put that into context, the total run-time of all the movies put together is some 19 hours and 40 minutes, which means poor Tom had to keep his hair dyed for all that time to appear on screen for about 2.5% of the entire run.

Understandably fans of the character have been dismayed at the revelation. One Twitter user wrote: "The fact Draco Malfoy was only in 31 minutes throughout the WHOLE of the Harry Potter franchise (19 hrs & 40 mins) jus doesn't sit right with me."

Another wrote: "Are you telling that 14 years old me celebrated the birthday of a character that had 31 minutes on screen?"

Before you also bemoan the apparently disappointingly sporadic bullying of Harry, though, we do need to clear things up a little. You see, screen time in a film is literally that: the time an actor is visibly on the screen.

This means that even if Draco was in the same room as other characters, if the shot was not showing him, it wouldn't count as screen time. Likewise if he was interacting with someone, if the camera switches between characters while they're talking to each other, Draco's screen time is only counted when it's on him.

In actuality the 31 minutes (and 30 seconds) that Draco Malfoy appears in the Harry Potter films is comparable to several other characters you might consider as prominent. Voldemort, for example, was on screen for 37 minutes and 15 seconds, while Hagrid appeared for 45 minutes and 45 seconds.

As for our main antagonist? Daniel Radcliffe's Harry Potter appeared for just under 9 hours in total across the eight films - less than half of the entire runtime.

Although if you ask us, if he's getting that much then we still think Draco should've had much more.
