A 'depraved' man who had sex with his pet chickens has had his jail term reduced, after senior judges concluded the original term was too long.

Footage of Rehan Baig, 37, having sex with the birds - which died as a result - was captured by his wife. It was found on computer equipment seized from his home in Bradford, West Yorkshire, along with indecent images of children.

Baig was jailed for three years at Bradford Crown Court in October last year after admitting a number of offences, which included having intercourse with an animal, possessing extreme pornographic images and making indecent photographs of children.

However, his sentence has now been cut to two years and four months, after two senior judges concluded that his original term was too lengthy at the Court of Appeal in London on Friday.

Baig's lawyers argued his jail term should be suspended so that he could be freed from prison immediately.

However, Sir Roderick Evans said: "We are satisfied that a significant and immediate term of custody was necessary."

The court heard how National Crime Agency officers executed a search warrant at the family home in July 2019, following information that Baig had indecent images of children.

After seizing computer equipment, a total of 49 indecent images of children were found, including 11 in the most serious category - some of which involved children as young as six.

Officers also found a 'significant' number of extreme pornographic images, along with 'first-generation, homemade movies' that featured Baig, and sometimes his wife, engaging in sexual activity with animals. These were saved until the file name 'Family Vids'.

Some of the content was 'of some duration in length' and featured Baig performing intercourse with chickens, while others featured the couple engaging in sex acts with a dog.

Sentencing the couple in October, Judge Richard Mansell QC said the acts 'would make any right-thinking member of society sick to their stomach'.

He described Baig's offending as 'depraved, perverted and despicable', saying the creation of the videos was 'simply beyond comprehension'.

Bradford Crown Court heard that his wife, Haleema Baig, sometimes joined her husband in the videos, and that at one point he had alternated between having sex with his wife and the chickens, which were originally family pets and all died.

Judge Mansell said: "The pain and suffering you inflicted on these animals must have been horrific."

Baig admitted three counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of possession of extreme pornography, three counts of sexual intercourse with an animal and two counts of possession of controlled drugs.

He was banned from keeping animals, and also placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

His wife Haleema was handed a six-month suspended sentence after she admitted aiding and abetting sexual intercourse with an animal - something she said was against a background of coercive and controlling behaviour by her husband.
