The BBC has issued an apology over its response to the allegations made against Radio 2 star Scott Mills, who was sacked by the broadcaster this week.

After working across BBC radio stations since the 1990s, it was announced on Monday (30 March) that Mills had been axed from his position following allegations about his 'personal conduct'.

The corporation said in a statement: "While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”

However, The Telegraph has since reported that despite the BBC knowing of separate allegations made against Mills almost a year ago, it failed to investigate.

It emerged shortly after Mills' sacking that he was questioned over sexual assault allegations against a teenage boy under the age of 16 in 2018.

It has been alleged that a freelance journalist contacted the BBC in May 2025 to say she had received information about alleged 'inappropriate communications' involving Mills, 53, and asked if the broadcaster was 'aware of or involved in any related matters'.

The broadcaster was also allegedly asked whether it had ever received any 'formal or informal complaints' about Mills 'relating to safeguarding, inappropriate conduct or harassment', and whether it had ever conducted an internal investigation into him.

Now, in a statement to Sky News, the BBC has apologised and acknowledged that this information 'should have been followed up'.

It said of these allegations: "We received a press query in 2025 which included limited information. This should have been followed up and we should have asked further questions.

"We apologise for this and will look into why this did not happen. More broadly, we would always urge anyone who has concerns or information to raise it with us."

Of the sexual assault allegations made against Mills, the Metropolitan Police told the BBC that a man who was in his 40s at the time was investigated in 2016 over allegations 'reported to have taken place between 1997 and 2000'.

"In December 2016, the Met began an investigation following a referral from another police force," a spokesperson said. "The investigation related to allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy."

"As part of these enquiries, a man who was in his 40s at the time of the interview was questioned by police under caution in July 2018," they added.

"A full file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, who determined the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Following this advice, the investigation was closed in May 2019."

Mills has been working across BBC radio stations since the 90s, and officially took over Radio 2's breakfast show from Zoe Ball in January 2025.

According to BBC data, he fronts the UK's most listened to breakfast show, with an average of 6.5 million listeners.

LADbible Group previously contacted Mills' representatives for comment.
