Full list of 2026 banned number plates as £1,000 fine warning issued by DVLA

Brits who buy a brand new car this year will be hitting the road with '26' registration plates, but some combinations are considered too inappropriate to make the cut.

If the amalgamation of letters and numbers spells out anything explicit or offensive, it won't ever see the light of day if the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) have anything to do with it.

If some people still somehow manage to bend the rules and fit an unapproved plate on their car, it could land them with a £1,000 fine.

Every year in the months of March and September, the DVLA debuts a new formation for number plates.

This includes letters, numbers and 'age identifier' digits - so if you snap up a new motor after March, it will include the numbers '26', while post-September purchases will have '76' on them instead.

The first two letters on the reg represents the 'local memory tag', which references where the vehicle was first registered. The letters at the latter part of the plate are randomly generated.

Some of these registration combinations end up spelling out something unsavoury, which might be deemed too rude to be seen on UK roads.

They can't allude to subjects such as crime, racism, politics or religion - and the DVLA don't want anything sordid stuck on the back of cars either.

To be fair, imagine how livid you would be if you collected the keys to your brand new motor, only to find out that the reg plate reads 'AA26 NUS'. That would surely ruin your day.

Although some Brits think these sort of reg plates might be harmless, or even hilarious, the CEO of RegTransfers Mark Trimbee said that banning some combinations is a necessary evil.

"The release of new number plates is always an exciting time for us, as it brings a fresh wave of fun, appealing and valuable combinations to our roads," he told The Sun.

"Sadly, it also brings a new horde of combinations that are considered a bit too risky to allow out into the public.

"The DVLA has an unfortunate role to play, and while some might see this as them being ‘killjoys’, they do have the responsibility to keep people safe from offensive, derogatory and provocative plates.

"This new list of banned combinations is one of the larger ones we’ve seen, but as with each new release, there will still be plenty of great combinations to look out for."

According to Auto Express, more than 400 combinations for reg plates featuring the numbers '26' have been deemed too inappropriate.

The DVLA warns drivers that 'rearranging or misrepresenting the numbers and letters on a number plate to form names or words, so that they are hard to read' is forbidden.

It explains: "For example, fixing bolts to change any of the letters or numbers. You could be fined up to £1,000 and your car will fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates.

"In some cases, the registration number may be permanently withdrawn. If you misrepresent a vehicle registration number you will not get back any money that you have paid for the registration number, or any other costs you have to pay. You can’t use a registration number to make your vehicle appear younger than it actually is."
