Man who jumped from top of Brooklyn Bridge after getting naked miraculously survives

A man jumped from the top of the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday and somehow survived.

The unidentified man leapt from the top of the iconic crossing in New York City on Sunday, 2 August, and plummeted 278 feet into the East River below.

Footage of the jump was captured from multiple angles and shared on social media by shocked onlookers as the man was spotted on top of the bridge's north stone tower.

At around 2:30pm, he jumped with only what appeared to be a food delivery bag for company, leaving his clothes on the top of the massive structure.

Spectators on the bridge can be heard screaming as the man fell, with a male voice heard saying: "Oh my god."

The man survived

TMZ reports that sources from the New York Police Department said the man was 44-years-old and carried a Kazakhstan flag on his climb, which he then attached to the bridge.

NPYD's Emergency Service Unit were on the scene and had climbed up the tower to attempt to talk the man down to safety.

However, despite their conversation, the man opted to run and jump off the bridge and fell into the river.

Thankfully, the NYPD's Harbour Unit were already on hand and were quickly able to lift him out of the water, and he was then rushed to hospital.

It's reported that, remarkably, the man did not suffer any physical injuries but was taken to hospital for psychiatric care.

It's added that police are still reviewing the incident to determine if the man committed a crime.

The jump comes a month on from the Empire State Building climbers

It's not the first time a major New York City landmark has been in the headlines for daring reasons this year.

Just over a month ago on July 1, the world was left jaw dropped when daredevil couple Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov allegedly climbed to the very top of the Empire State Building.

While at the peak of the building's antenna, a banner was unfurled, which read: "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."

They then climbed down slightly to a platform, where Kuznetsov seemingly proposed to Nikolau, with the subsequent engagement snaps going viral.

After around 30 minutes the police, with safety equipment in contrast to the couple, climbed up to arrest them.

NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch said of the officers who made the arrest: "These are men and women of uncommon valour, it really can take your breath away, but this is what the men and women of ESU (emergency service unit) do basically every day."

The couple were charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, criminal tampering, disorderly conduct and possession of burglar’s tools on July 2.

The couple are on supervised release until their next court appearance, which is set for 24 August.
