Man in viral Charlie Kirk shooting video responds to ‘sick’ use of footage as a meme
The man who was speaking to Charlie Kirk the moment he was killed believes people using the video of his reaction as a joke are 'broken inside.'
Hunter Kozak, 30, had asked Kirk a question about his previous statements on trans-gender mass shooters during the Turning Point USA event on September 10, 2025, at the Utah Valley University campus, where he is a student of maths.
As Kirk was giving his answer, he was fatally shot by a rooftop sniper and multiple angles of the killing instantly spread across the globe on social media.
One such video zooms in on Kozak's back and the moment he replies 'great' to Kirk, the deafening crack of a gunshot can be heard.

Kozak, a married father of two, is seen reacting in horror to the assassination he had just witnessed right in front of him, shaking his hands around his head in shock before ducking for cover.
As did a lot of the imagery around Kirk's death, the footage has gone on to be used as an internet meme, something Kozak says is 'sick.'

On Monday, September 7, an X user posted the clip in response to the news that NFL team Atlanta Falcons will start Tua Tagovailoa as their quarterback in the season opener on Sunday.
Quoting the post, Kozak explained that it was him in the video and how he is still dealing with post-traumatic stress from that incident nearly a year on.
"Sorry to put a damper on the funny little meme campaign that we have about a man dying," he wrote.
"But just want to share that I went to a carnival today to celebrate my daughter’s birthday and I had a persistent thought like ten times about someone shooting the place up."
He then explained how he knows watching the videos is not healthy for him, but he struggles to avoid them as they have become so ever present as they used for laughs.
"I know I have PTSD and I shouldn’t rewatch these videos but for a year now they’ve been inescapable on the internet, simply because people find it funny," he added, before moving to criticise anyone who uses them in such a way.
"Like seriously, look at the f______ context that this is in response to.
"It’s sick.
"You guys have something broken inside you to use this video as a response in the way you did."
Tyler Robinson to stand trial for killing of Charlie Kirk
A judge ruled on Tuesday, September 1, that Tyler Robinson will stand trial for the killing of Charlie Kirk.
The 23-year-old has been charged with aggravated murder and six other counts in connection to the shooting of Kirk, who was 31 when he died.
Judge Graf said: “Viewed in the light most favourable to the prosecution, this evidence is sufficient at this stage to support a reasonable belief that the defendant is the individual who shot and killed Charlie Kirk.
“Accordingly, the state has demonstrated probable cause as to identity and homicide elements of count one.”
Robinson plead not guilty to the charges, via his lawyers. The 23-year-old is eligible for the death penalty due to the aggravating factor of the charge.
Writing a personal essay in the New York Times, Kirk's wife, Erika Kirk, opened up on what the immediate hours after her husband's death was like, calling them a 'fever dream.'
