Trump told he might be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by world leader after brokering deal

Four US presidents have won the award in the past

Donald Trump has been told he could be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize after the US helped broker a peace deal between two countries.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda have signed a peace deal with the help of the US, with Trump saying the Americans would be getting 'a lot' of mineral rights as a result.

As a deal was signed in the White House, a reporter told Trump that the DRC's president was considering nominating Trump for an accolade, saying: "President Félix Tshisekedi is thinking of nominating you for the Nobel Peace Prize."

President Tshisekedi himself has also spoken about his intention to nominate Trump for a Nobel Peace Price.

He told local media: "If President Trump can mediate and put an end to this war, he deserves the Nobel Prize. I would be the first to vote for him."

Trump really wants to win a Nobel Prize and has loudly complained about his predecessor Barack Obama being awarded one, having said: "If I were named Obama, I would have had the Nobel Prize given to me in 10 seconds."

Last week, he was moaning that getting the DRC and Rwanda to sign a treaty wouldn't get him the award, taking to Truth Social to list a series of global events he thinks he should have been honoured for.

"This is a Great Day for Africa and, quite frankly, a Great Day for the World! I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for this,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between India and Pakistan … for stopping the War between Serbia and Kosovo … for keeping Peace between Egypt and Ethiopia … and I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for doing the Abraham Accords in the Middle East."

The government of Pakistan has said it wants to nominate Trump from a Nobel Prize for his part in preventing a war between them and India.

Meanwhile, a nomination for the US president from Ukrainian politician Oleksandr Merezhko submitted back in November was recently withdrawn over a lack of American action on Russia's invasion.

He was also recently nominated for the Nobel Prize by one of his own politicians, Republican congressman Buddy Carter who praised Trump for his part in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Four US presidents in total have won the Nobel Peace Prize, though only three of them have won it while in office.

The first was Teddy Roosevelt in 1906 for his part in mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese war, making him the first American to get the award.

In 1919 it was awarded to Woodrow Wilson for his role in founding the League of Nations, an organisation which didn't end up succeeding at much, partly because the US never joined it.

Former US President Jimmy Carter received the accolade in 2002, more than 20 years after he left the White House, while Barack Obama received it in 2009 shortly after he moved into the building.

Several other Americans have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, including some highly controversial figures such as Henry Kissinger.
