Airport officials revealed that all hell broke loose at around 7.30pm local time last night when the vehicle smashed into the McNamara Terminal.
Bystanders told local news outlet WXYZ Detroit that they heard a 'huge' bang as the car careered into the airport while employees were working at the check-in desks.

One witness claimed that the driver exited the motor with 'his hands raised and talking', although it was unclear what he was saying.
According to onlooker Ali Khalifa, officials at Detroit Metro Airport sprang into action within 'seconds' and quickly detained the driver.
"The response was so quick, thank God, with the cops and TSA and everybody," he told the publication. "That all happened in seconds."
Debris flew across the terminal in wake of the man's collision with the ticket counter, which struck three Delta Air Lines employees, the airline announced.
In a statement to CBS News, Delta clarified that the trio did not report any injuries while adding that there was no operational impact, although the staff members were checked over by emergency responders.
Despite the mayhem that erupted in the airport terminal, no injuries were reported elsewhere either. The extent of the damage caused by the crash currently remains unclear.

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) Police Department told LADbible that the incident is currently under investigation.
In a statement, the WCAA said: "A vehicle that drove into the entrance of the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) hitting a ticket counter.
"The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 this evening. The driver is in custody and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time. The WCAA Fire Department treated six people at the scene.
"We’ll provide more information as it becomes available."
Typically, airport car crashes usually involve people who have left their vehicles with valet parking services for the duration of their holidays.
One bloke's BMW One Series ended up being smashed into a concrete bollard, while another couple arrived back in the country to find their motor had somehow ended up in a hedge.
