Donald Trump has declared that Iran will 'pay the price' as he raged on Truth Social that the country has taken too long to agree a deal with the US and Israel.

He declared: "Iran’s Military is a complete and total mess. Much of it, like their Navy and Air Force, doesn’t even exist anymore - They have been completely defeated.

"Iran is all talk and no action. The Bully of the Middle East is DEAD!!! They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

There had been a ceasefire in place for a time, but Iran and Israel exchanged missile fire on Monday (8 June), while yesterday the US announced they had carried out strikes against Iran in response to one of their helicopters being downed.

Today the US launched more airstrikes against Iran and the Iranians fired back at countries on the Persian Gulf.

Earlier this week Trump had been suggesting a deal to end the war might only be a few days away, instead it looks like the ceasefire is off and hostilities are set to resume.

In recent weeks he has flip-flopped between suggesting a resolution was close, which was usually met with an improvement in global markets and a reduction in oil prices, and threatening the country if they didn't do as he said.

While Iran has been struck many times the missile exchanges this week show they still have munitions and the means to fire them, and they can still exert enough of a threat onto the Strait of Hormuz to effectively close it.

Around 20 percent of the world's supply of oil and natural gas flows through the strait, and the disruption caused by war has meant supplies have become scarcer and prices have risen.

With an apparent resumption of hostilities it remains to be seen what happens next, and whether any kind of negotiated deal was ever as close as Trump claimed.
