Donald Trump faces backlash over what he did with JD Vance at senator's funeral

The US President has found himself getting a lot of online attention over his actions at the funeral of senator Lindsey Graham.

Trump attracted the unexpected responses over his exchange with righthand man JD Vance - and it was all over a tiny box of mints.

Clips posted on social media from the memorial became a major talking point, showing the President, 80, sharing a box of Tic Tacs with Vice President JD Vance as they sat in the front row at the Washington D.C funeral for Graham.

The pair were also surrounded by other US and global political leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

During the service, Trump delivered a eulogy - but the focus still remained solely on the moment the president shared a box of Tic Tacs with Vance.

The brief interaction took place as mourners gathered to pay their respects, with Trump appearing to offer Vance some mints.

They both appeared to be smirking before Trump had also attempted to toss one of the mints into his own mouth before missing, and it drew quite the attention online. The small mint was seen falling to the floor beside the coffin.

“Laughing in front of his coffin”, one X user wrote. Another person on social media wrote: “World leaders flew in across the globe for a national solemn service at the Capitol, and the main viral takeaway is President Trump treating the front pew like a movie theater snack bar with JD Vance."

As a third commented: “Two hours into Lindsey Graham's funeral, President Trump has started dealing Tic-Tacs to Vance and Bessent, giving them a laugh”. Another user quipped that the small mint ‘took the brave way out’.

Some users also criticised Trump for appearing to talk and laugh during parts of the memorial, as one post read: “Who talks and laughs during a serious memorial?"

Trump pays tribute to 'respected statesman'

Speaking at the service at Washington's National Cathedral, Trump hailed 71-year-old Graham as a 'respected statesman, a giant of the United States Senate and a true American original' who had been the first person 'to make you laugh and one of the last people you really ever want to fight'.

He continued: “For more than 30 years, nothing of consequence happened in this capital without Lindsey Graham knowing about it. Nothing of significance happened anywhere in the world without Lindsey Graham having a view on it, and no bill became law in the most exceptional republic in human history without Lindsey Graham having a say in it."

Graham was a politician, attorney and military officer who had represented South Carolina in the Senate from 2003 until his death in July.

A statement from his office on July 12 said he passed away following a 'sudden illness'. The statement added: "Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.
