Couple Shocked After Paying £8.20 For Two Cokes Because Of 'Covid Fee'

A couple have been left angry after they were charged £8.20 for two bottles of Coca Cola, including an added 'Covid fee'.

The pair were told by The Fat Cat cafe bar in Nottingham that the extra money was to cover restrictions put in place to stop the spread of the virus that had seen them shut for several crucial months of the year so far.

Obviously, there has been extra costs incurred by many places to make their venues safe to take in patrons once again.

Looks like one place in particular has lost a couple of customers though, as the pair have vowed never to darken its door again.

Ron and Margaret Wiltshire were told that the extra money at the Fat Cat was charged to cover a table booking, or for PPE and hand gel.

The Wiltshires said: "We will not go back."

They'd been visiting the bar during a day out from their home town of Sheffield, and thought they'd stop for a refreshing soft drink along the way.

Then, they were aghast after being charged more than eight quid for the two bottles of Coke.

Mr Wiltshire told Nottingham Live: "We sat outside. The lady at the bar said it was £1 per person for track and trace which seemed strange but agreed as we needed a drink.

"The barman came out to us with the drinks and a card machine. When we paid he mumbled something about 'the charge you've been told about'.

"My wife said, 'Wow £8.20 for 2 Diet Cokes!' They were bottles - not the large ones, but smallish glass bottles.

"On getting home I phoned to check and was told that the charge was for hand sanitiser and PPE.

"Now I know some companies are finding things a struggle but this is the only time I've been charged this, even small independent retailers don't charge. We will not be going back there again."

It was only a bottle like this, too.

Despite the Wiltshires' rage at the extra payment, the bar insists that the charge is OK, and says they're not the only ones in the area doing it.

A spokesperson for the Fat Cat told Nottingham Live: "The £1 charge is a booking fee. It's not for PPE and hand sanitiser.

"Everyone is made fully aware of the booking charge before they sit down.

"A lot of bars are charging in town and we are too. Are we doing anything wrong? Are we breaking the law?"
