A bar in Dubai has gone viral after offering out free drinks to women based upon how much they weigh.

As far as happy hour offers go, this is a pretty strange one.

Fusion Club, at the Cassells Al Barsha Hotel in the Emirati city, has introduced a drinks promotion that rewards heavier women. The more they weigh, the more free drinks they can receive.

In order to claim this reward, the women must either stand on a set of scales by the door that bear a sign with the slogan 'it's good to gain weight', or present the bar staff with a piece of paper that tells their weight.

One kilogram of weight is equal to one United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED). That means that a woman weighing 60 kilograms will get free drinks to the tune of 60AED, or about £12.60 in UK money.

The deal applies to any drink whatsoever, so you can choose your poison.

The bar claims the tag-line 'it's good to gain weight' - which is plastered not only on the scales, but around the venue - is exactly what it sounds like.

In a roundabout way, they seem to be trying to promote body positivity, which is a good thing, right?

Anyway, vice president of the bar Mr Baburaj told Metro: "'We believe in being different than the rest of the nightclubs and hotels in making our guests delighted. We wanted the ladies to surprise their partners and friends that it's good to gain weight.

"We have different promotions at Fusion Club every month, which are often 'crazy' and unique and are enjoyed by both men and women."

He continued: "Dubai is a city for entertainment and fun.

"We never ask any women to check their weight, we trust them and just serve whatever number they wrote on the paper without asking any questions and therefore we don't see any reason to feel we had bad intentions about the offer."

However, not everyone is so enthused by the idea.

In fact, some people reckon it encourages obesity. One Twitter user said: "This is just stupid, and FYI it promotes fat gain and obesity... like the fatter you are the more we'll allow you to consume empty calories which, in turn, will make you... even fatter?"

As it happens, the bar said the deal has been so successful they've extended it already. It was supposed to finish in August, but will now continue until December.

It's certainly one way to get more pint for your pounds.
