It's very rare for a priest to invite someone into his rectory and it's even rarer for him to take his top off and hide you under his sink.

That's why the people of Nova Maringá in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso were completely shellshocked when they discovered that their preacher was hiding someone else's fiancée under his bathroom sink.

To top it all off, the woman was engaged to one of his own parishioners.

Reverend Luciano Braga Simplicio claimed the woman was only taking a shower after a group of angry men made their way into the parish house of Our Lady of Aparecida Parish to confront him.

The peculiar incident took place on Monday (13 October), in the small 5,000-person town of Nova Maringá, which is located just 300 miles east of the Bolivian border.

Simplicio was found in his gym shorts and nothing else, with his attempts to leave the room rebuffed by the mob who were questioning him of the missing fiancée's whereabouts.

He was made to open a door which the group believed the woman was behind, as community blog Pelo Bem de São José reported that the priest snuck the unnamed woman into his home next to the church, early on Monday morning.

It's believed that her fiancé was out of town, so when the preacher was confronted, he was caught off guard and appeared confused as he was yelled at, while his clerical clothing and other religious items were in the background.

A viral video of the incident was posted online, showing Simplicio knocking on the door in question, while pushing back the man holding the camera.

Unsurprisingly, the angry man wasn't satisfied and grabbed a stool to break into the locked door, which led to a bedroom, as the fiancé subsequently ran up to another shut door which was again broken with the wooden stool.

It led to the bathroom, which is where the missing fiancée, 21, was found in tears while hiding under the sink, dressed in a tank top and shorts.

She was pulled out from her hiding place, as both her and Simplicio denied having any sexual relations despite the situation, with the latter doubling down.

According to local outlet Termometra da Policita, the Reverend claimed that the woman only used his bathroom because she needed a shower following a long day of working at the church.

As you can imagine, the video of the scandal went viral, causing tension in the small Brazilian community of Nova Maringá.

Diocese of Diamantino, a Roman Catholic diocese located in the city of Diamantino which is responsible for overseeing both Simplicio and Our Lady of Aparecid, have had officials open an internal investigation into the situation.

In an official statement, the diocese said: “We communicate that, with the good of the Church and the people of God in mind, all the necessary canonical measures are already being duly taken. We ask for everyone’s understanding and prayers.”

It's believed that the investigation will reveal if Simplicio violated the 1983 Code of Canon Law, which is in place to stop priests of the Latin church from engaging in any affective, let alone sexual, relations, say the outlet.

The fiancée has also filed a police report, claiming that the video was incorrectly disseminated following the priest's alleged actions.
