People are losing their minds as cruise ship worker reveals how much he spends every day

Not exactly value for money, some are saying

The cost of a cruise ship holiday certainly ain't cheap.

Expect to spend thousands for the luxury of a room with a window and then even more once you're on board, whether that's drinks packages, premium menus or shopping.

But life is very, very different if you are one hundreds that make a cruise ship run. Some vessels even have more than 1,000 crew members, with an average of one for every three to four passengers.

And one cruise ship worker has revealed exactly what it costs him every day as part of his time working on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Bryan James is living on the vessel for six months, touring the world as a solo guitarist entertaining its maximum of 4,198 guests.

He took to YouTube to detail his daily and monthly expenses living on board, with one detail completely throwing viewers in to disbelief.

Firstly, a lot of what he gets is completely free.

His spacious room? It comes free with the contract for the job. Food? Also free it you stick to the crew mess.

You could spend on the public decks, but as Bryan says, 'I'm here to work and save'.

Not everything is free, though.

Speaking about what he does spend money on, viewers couldn't cope with one thing we all take for granted: Wi-Fi.

It's not cheap at $12 for just three hours coverage," he explained.

"And then even after paying it's a pretty poor download speed at less than 2MB per second. It can then worsen depending on how many people are using the service."

Bryan added: "Here's how much money I spend every day as a crew member working on a cruise ship.

"First though, it's really important to know what I don't spend my money on and most importantly that's my room. It's completely free, comes with the job. And certain jobs get certain types of rooms.

"I'm a solo guitarist on this ship which means I get a room which is really huge compared to most cruise ship cabins."

Bryan then cuts to a video of his previous cabin from when he was living on a cruise ship as a member of a band which was tiny in comparison to his solo guitarist contract.

"And then there's food. Zero dollars spent on food. I eat down at the crew mess every single day.

"I could in theory go to other restaurants onboard and spend money but ultimately I'm here to work and save as much as possible."

So, what does Bryan spend his money on?

"Soda. I know it's really bad for me but it's just a part of my life and I buy two cans of soda a day that comes out to $1.72," Bryan said.

"I spent my money on internet, costing me $12 a day and that gets me three hours at around one megabit per second or so.

"If the network is super busy then it can be a little bit lower so there we have it. I spend $411 per month for two sodas and three hours of internet each day."

Responding to the eye-opening cost of Wi-Fi, one YouTube user said: "What I am hearing is that, if you are working on a cruise ship, you should download a tonne of videos to a hard drive for entertainment."

A second wrote: "$12 a day for internet? Crazy."

While a third posted: "The Wi-Fi charges cover the price of the 'free food'."

And a fourth added: "Charging for 1MB of internet is BS."
