Vladimir Putin has his own 'Doomsday plane' and you never want to see it in the sky

Vladimir Putin has his own special ‘Doomsday plane’ which, if seen in the sky, should cause alarm.

Known as the ‘Flying Kremlin’ plane or the ‘Maxdome’, its use is in the event of a nuclear war.

The Ilyushin Il-80 is a Russian airborne command and control aircraft that the Russian president can use to run his country and make a quick escape if needed.

There’s no denying that our worries around the likelihood of some nuclear bombing going off has increased recently, with ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia still ongoing and the war between the US and Iran.

The Flying Kremlin is a Russian-made and modified version of the Il-86 passenger and cargo plane.

But it won't be taking people on holidays abroad, and is instead designed specifically to protect Russian leadership, such as Putin, in a worst-case scenario and rapidly fly them to safety.

The plane has no windows except for in the cockpit to ensure maximum protection flying through tricky weather conditions or a nuclear blast.

It is an airborne command post with special communications equipment that is also reported to prevent exposure to electromagnetic pulse attacks.

And in the case of nuclear warfare, Russia would use the aircraft to command and communicate with troops on the ground.

Col. Cedric Leighton, a former U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer, previously explained more about the mysterious aircraft as he explained just why there aren’t any windows.

“Those windows [which would typically be on the side] are non-existent because they want to make sure that in case there’s a nuclear blast, that there is absolutely no possibility of the windows shattering,” he told CNN.

There’s also a special dome on top of the plane that should allow the Russians to continue with secure communications ‘under almost all conditions’.

Another key feature in its design is that it can even be refuelled in mid-air so it can stay off of the ground for longer periods of time.

Unless in the event of a pre-planned display, it's safe to say that seeing these Doomsday planes in the sky could be a bad sign.

The Ilyushin Il-80 plane was last publicly seen in flight during a Moscow Victory Day rehearsal in May 2022, while the fleet remains officially active in the Russian military's inventory.
