Let's face it, many of us are guilty of claiming it's a mate's birthday to get a free dessert or some balloons inside a hotel room, but one young couple recently went a step further by 'faking their engagement'.
This was all in a bid to bag a free dessert and hotel upgrade in the Shard - and they did it with the help of the woman's mum's engagement ring.
Rhian Smith says she borrowed her mother's ring while going for a meal and stay at the swanky London restaurant and hotel on 3 December with her boyfriend Harry Collins.
The pair, from Liverpool, are shown dressed up in smart black clothes for their 'special' night, with Rhian posting pictures of them celebrating their successful con.

Superior rooms in the luxurious hotel cost upward of £795 ($1,050) around this time of year - stretching to £1,045 ($1,380) for city views.
As a result of this, online commenters were impressed when the teen posted about their success in bagging the free course and upgrade, with some even vowing to try it themselves.
Rhian said in a Tweet: "Borrowing me mums engagement ring to get a hotel room upgrade and a free [dessert] in the shard tonight. We just got engaaaaaged can we have a bigger room pls."

The following morning she posted an update saying 'bag secured' to celebrate their success in getting the freebies they'd hoped for, along with a photo showing Harry holding his 'fiance's' hand.
She also included a close up shot of their free desserts displayed on plates with 'Congratulations' written in chocolate with the engagement ring visible on her finger.
The tweet has since gone viral, with 7,771 likes, 124 retweets and 36 quote tweets, with most seeing the funny side and sharing their support for the couple.

Responding to Rhian, one person said: "That's quality," while another added: "Can only rate it."
Meanwhile others were less impressed, with someone commenting calling the pair 'cheap b*****s' and another branding the pair 'pathetic'.
Some also came out in support of the business, with one writing: "Bet @TheShardLondon @ShangriLaHotels are loving having the p**s taken out of them!! #theshard #liar #fake."
Rhian declined to comment further and The Shard were contacted for comment.
