Noel Gallagher has paid a moving tribute to the actor Caroline Aherne, dedicating his hit 'Half the World Away' to her while on tour in America.

The song was the theme tune to Royle Family, which she co-wrote and starred in.

The former Oasis singer had promised he would sing for the comedian while on tour in the States.

His performance came just hours after he had heard Caroline - who was his good friend - had died from cancer aged just 52.

You can watch part of his performance here...

Performing with his band High Flying Birds, Noel told a capacity 2,400 crowd at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium: "I want to dedicate the next song to a friend of mine who died this afternoon.

"Her name was Caroline and she was a very very very funny woman.

"She used this next song on a very very very very brilliant sitcom in England called The Royle Family."

He then pointed upwards and said: "So wherever you are." Before breaking into song.

Earlier in the day he had posted a picture of Caroline on his Instagram account.

Caroline Aherne tragically passed away at the age of 52 after a battle with cancer, on Saturday, at her home in Greater Manchester.

Concert goer Aimee Breeden told the Daily Mail the performance was 'just so moving'.

Adding: "We all knew how emotional the concert was going to be and there were a few in tears when he sung.

"A lot of Brits had travelled from across the States to see Noel and they all knew what Caroline meant to him."

RIP Caroline, thank you for the laughs.
