The Purge film franchise is set to be remade for television, creator James DeMonaco has confirmed.

Focused on the idea that for one night each year government lifts all punishments for any crime, supposedly guaranteeing a peaceful and law-abiding country for the remainder of the year, the low-budget horror films have proved popular with audiences across the globe.

Offering a twisted insight into human nature, the films depict a dystopian America where for the 12 hour each year well-behaved citizens release their id and start killing and pillaging and whatever else.

The film as series has grossed over $317 million in the worldwide box office against a combined budget of $22 million.

James DeMonaco, The Purge creator, told Cinema Blend: "My idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.

"It will be interesting to show those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else. I think there's something cool that we can do with the real estate of TV - 10 hours, potentially."

The television series, which is currently in development, will explore why people resort to criminality, through - in the word of the franchises' creator - an 'interwoven anthology'

Sounds really interesting, personally I can't wait.
