A vigil in Birmingham for Manchester attack victims was interrupted after a man reportedly armed with a large knife and baseball bat was detained nearby.

The West Midlands city held a candle-lit vigil in Victoria Square this evening to show solidarity with the victims of last night's terror attack in Manchester.

But footage from the scene shows police surrounding the man as loud shouting is heard.

Twenty-two people were killed and over 50 injured in the tragic suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert last night.

Eight-year-old Saffie Roussos, 18-year-old Georgina Callander and 26-year-old John Atkinson have so far been identified as among those killed.

Earlier this evening, US officials announced British authorities have identified the suspected Manchester suicide bomber as Salman Abedi. He is believed to be a British man of Libyan origin.

Armed officers were also seen in Fallowfield, Manchester this afternoon, where they carried out a 'controlled explosion' according to local residents.

Peter Gallagher, 44, was in a house nearby when he heard the bang. He told LADbible: "I was in my front room watching the television when I heard what sounded like a car crash.

"Everyone came out on to the street and saw the police arriving. I didn't see it happen but people are saying a door has been blown off."

Manchester refused to break after last night's attack. Off-duty medics showed up to help out, taxi drivers worked for free and hundreds of residents offered up beds, sofas and cups of tea for those affected.
