Man takes on terrifying 6ft Terminator-like robot in bizarre world-first MMA fight

A TikTok influencer took on a terrifying Terminator-lookalike robot in one of the most bizarre MMA bouts you’ll ever see.

The mis-matched MMA fight was billed as a world’s first between man and machine and clips from the event show it was worth the wait.

Robotics company REK organised the match between content creator Frankie LaPenna and its formidable 6ft-tall Rekbot.

The robot, which has been compared to T-800 from the Terminator movies, for obvious reasons, had glowing red eyes, huge metallic fists and a seriously creepy skull-like ‘face’.

Footage from just before the fight showed a man in a REK T-shirt and baseball cap telling LaPenna: “I’m scared for you, man.”

LaPenna, who was sensibly clad in plenty of protective gear, didn’t appear to be too concerned as he headed towards the octagon while the announcer declared: “For the first time in history, a human faces off against a six-foot-tall robot.”

The Rekbot could be seen stretching a little and throwing some punches before the fight got underway.

And it seemed like a solid start from LaPenna who managed to get a few shots in on the bot.

But the upper hand didn’t last long and the Rekbot soon sent him sprawling to the canvas with an almighty roundhouse kick.

Speaking after the fight, LaPenna told the Daily Mail: “I didn't want to fight the robot, I had to. I am a stunt-man, this is what I do for a living.

“This was nothing out of the ordinary for me, it was just another regular work week for me. This robot fight doesn't even rank in the top five most dangerous things I've done.”

And it seems he could be right, because according to REK CEO Cix Liv, despite how it looked, LePenna actually won the bout.

However, despite securing the win, he admitted that it had been a pretty scary experience.

“When I first saw the robot I nearly soiled my pants,” he (over) shared.

“You really cannot explain how absurd and terrifying this robot truly is, until you see it in person. The ground literally shakes when it walks.”

The comments were soon flooded with folks who were left somewhat petrified at the thought of robots turning against us, with one writing: “Humans are doing everything they can to make the human race extinct one day like what are we doing.”

Another said: “Why is technology trying to kill us? Because we're teaching it how.”

While someone else wrote: “Stop teaching them how to fight.”

However, the Rekbot wasn’t a case of AI going rogue and was actually controlled remotely by the team from REK.

The one-of-a-kind exhibition bout was used to promote the company’s new virtual reality game, which sees humans take on humanoid robots.

While the man versus machine fight is one of the wildest matches we’ve seen, it’s not the only unusual pairing to hit headlines in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, amateur MMA fighter Cole Johnson claimed he’d been offered a whopping $500,000 to fight a chimpanzee.

As you might have guessed, the proposed fight sparked a huge outcry over the danger he would face and animal cruelty in forcing the chimpanzee to fight for entertainment.

Professor Joanna Setchel, a primate expert from Durham University in the UK, told the Daily Mail: "The important question isn’t whether a human could 'beat' a chimpanzee.

"It is why anyone would deliberately place an endangered, highly intelligent and socially complex wild animal in a frightening and potentially injurious situation for entertainment in the first place."

Fortunately for all concerned, the fight has since been cancelled.
