People in New South Wales are now able to have their driver's licence on their phones.

Roads and Maritime Service opened the technology to citizens this morning, allowing them have all their details on their smartphones.

The app will have a copy of your picture, the licence number, the expiry date and your address as well as a QR code that can be checked by authorities for authenticity.

NSW Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said: "We're using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios.

"[Digital licences] will provide additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic driver's licence."

More than 14,000 people were gifted with the technology earlier in a trial to see how it would go, however they still had to have their physical copy.

You need to be careful when you're driving, though, especially if you get pulled over. It is still technically illegal to use your phone while driving so you have to wait until an officer asks you for your licence until picking up your phone.

The agency said: "If you get pulled over by the police, do not pick up your phone until the officer requests to see your driver licence. Significant penalties apply for using a mobile phone illegally."

But while it's undeniably handy, we're still encouraged to have our physical copies just in case.

The Service NSW website reads: "Always carry your plastic card if you know you're going to need your driver licence, or if you plan to travel interstate. Ensure your phone screen is not cracked and your phone is charged."
