People On The Internet Think Greggs Could Save The UK Economy

People On The Internet Think Greggs Could Save The UK Economy

Should we get behind this?

According to the National Debt Clock, the UK's national debt currently stands at around £1.6trillion and is growing at a rate of £5,170 per second.

Most people are calling for the entire mechanism of Government finance to be overhauled, but a small section of the internet thinks the answer to our economic turmoil is nationalising Greggs. Yep.

Redditor CMCyantist was mulling over the benefits of nationalisation while he tucked into one of the store's sensational, but lukewarm, sausage rolls.

His post reads:

I'm about to sit down and eat my sausage roll and a steak bake, I've got a cookie to polish off with and a bottle of Irn Bru and it's dawning on me that Greggs really should be nationalized.

  • Natural monopoly - Bakers Oven was shit, Cooplands is shit and Pound bakery is good for the price, but it's no Greggs.
  • Greggs registered a 41% jump in profit in 2014, before tax that's 58.3 Million, and the year before was 41.3 Million. That's profit we could be redistributing to build new schools.
  • Patriotism. It's a good British company. It's still rooted in Tyneside, AFAIK They don't do any taxation shenanigans.
  • A government involvement would result in great distribution of Greggs shops, instead of 5 in the Leeds high street, we could get a few more down south and further increase profits.

Has there ever been a better argument for nationalisation?

The feedback from the community has been mixed. Many believe nationalised industries are the key to economic stability. British Steel, Jaguar, British Gas and British Telecommunications were all profitable successes.

However, others think Greggs should remain a pure and untouched private provider of pasties.

Here are just a few of the comments:

StonedPhysicist:

I've said this for years. Glasgow alone would wipe out the deficit.

LouisCowell:

*spits* I don't want our decadent capitalist pig-dog state getting their hands on Greggs. I'm all for the means of pie production being redistributed to the worker.

VanishingZero:

To hell with nationalisation, we need to make it part of the NHS.

"Doctor, I'm depressed.".

"No problem. I'm going to prescribe you a course of corned-beef pasties and Belgian buns."

Sorted. And you'd probably gain weight on normal anti-depressants anyway; at least this way you get to enjoy it.

Of course, there are pros and cons to such a move, but the question that will long remain on all of our lips is: Would nationalisation ensure we're served hot food and not just 'it's only warm, love, is that ok?' products?
