Guests left furious after bride and groom announce plans to only serve water at wedding

"I didn't think this would be a problem! It's only water."

Weddings can be pretty dry affairs, especially when there's no free booze - now just imagine that but instead of mocktails or Coke, there's just... water.

This is exactly what a couple have proposed for their big day, and the decision has left quite a lot of their guests furious.

One half of the couple took to Reddit to ask the opinion of the online community under the 'AITA (Am I the A**hole?)' thread.

Choosing to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, they wrote: "My husband and I are getting married later this year.

"Each of our sides of the family are fairly big. It will be around 100-150 people total.

"My husband and I are paying for this all ourselves, as well as my grandma who said she doesn't care one way or the other on this issue."

Since they don't drink, they've decided to not serve any alcohol at the wedding.

"Nothing against people who do, it's just not for us and we don't want to," they said.

There'll be none of this at their wedding.

"On top of that, we only really drink water. We rarely, if ever, drink soda so most of the time it's only water with the occasional juice and milk. We don't even drink coffee."

According to the original poster, there will be a good selection of food to choose from - but since it's the couple's responsibility to pay for this part of the wedding, they don't want to have to stretch to soft drinks or booze.

"It is just a large added expense when we can just do filtered water for a MUCH cheaper cost," they added.

But when they shared this tidbit with their guests, well, it went down like a s**t sandwich.

They continued: "Some didn't really care but some are really upset about it."

They finished by asking if they are the a**hole, writing: "I didn't think this would be a problem! It's only water. I mean, don't most people drink water everyday anyway?"

Their post has received thousands of comments, a majority of which are from people who side with the guests.

As said by one Redditor: "I know that technically you could be in the right, but here’s the thing about weddings - the marriage ceremony is for you and your fiancé.

"The wedding is for everyone you’ve invited, it’s an event you’re hosting, and not providing any drinks other than water makes you a bad host/hostess."

Another wrote: "It's cheap and tacky to only serve water. I would 100% be pregaming in the parking lot if I found out I couldn't even get an iced tea or a soda."

The couple don't think there's anything wrong with the idea.

"Your guests are not likely to think it's very celebratory if you just serve water," added a third. "And you would be surprised by the number of people who NEVER drink water, let alone do it at celebrations."

One person, who made a very good point, said: "Hope that in 20 years everyone still saying 'you remember that wedding we had to smuggle in a two litre of Pepsi?'"

Others were a little more sympathetic to the situation, including this person who wrote: "I went to a dry wedding (the bride and groom had both struggled with alcoholism) that had like three different mocktails to choose from and it made it very celebratory and still feel adult."

Reddit has spoken - if you want to do a dry wedding, at least serve drinks with a splash of flavour.
