A woman from the US has explained how she got pregnant at 17, despite claiming to have still been a virgin at the time.

The miracle of childbirth is a wonderful thing, but for Kelsi Mickelson, it truly was a miracle, given that she'd been told by doctors two years prior that she wouldn't be able to even have sex, let alone get pregnant.

When she was 15, she visited a gynaecologist for the first time to be told that she had an incredibly small vaginal opening; so small, in fact, that a tampon wouldn't even fit, let alone penetrative sex.

She recalled: “I went to my mom and she took me to the doctor for my first OBGYN appointment. She (the doctor) told me, ‘Honey, I can’t even get my pinky in there.

“She could not do a pelvic exam. So she’s like, ‘It doesn’t affect you and it’s not a problem except you can’t have sex.’”

She had planned to get a hymenectomy to remove the excess skin at 18, but it was before then that she ended up falling pregnant.

When she got a boyfriend, she immediately broke the news that they wouldn't be able to be intimate, but he was very accepting and they stayed together.

It was a few weeks after a night of 'fooling around', minus the penetrative part, that Kelsi was left concerned as she noticed that her period had not arrived, and a pregnancy test confirmed what she and her mother hadn't thought possible.

Coming from a religious background, there were immediate connections with the Virgin Mary, but her reality actually cost Kelsi a lot of friends who refused to believe that she'd fallen pregnant without having sex before marriage.

She added: “I had friends say I was a liar and just didn’t want to admit I had sex. It was actually a very difficult time in my life.”

Kelsi was keen to stretch things a little before her baby arrived, and after marrying her boyfriend and moving in together, they had sex for the first time when she was six months pregnant.

Although there were fears among medical experts about her ability to deliver the child, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl back in September 2009.

She said: “Even up until the day of going into labour, it was hard for them to even do full pelvic exams because the skin was still there and it was thick,” she says.

“After they were thinking they would have to go and cut some of the skin off, they didn’t – it disintegrated.

“Her coming down the birth canal, all that skin was gone. Our daughter was born weighing 6lbs 11oz, no complications and we named her Zoe. The name means “Life, full of spirit”

“So when I say I got pregnant without having sex, I literally got pregnant without having sex.”

Fortunately, she was able to have sex that wasn't painful in the wake of Zoe arriving, and she's since gone on to have four more kids; although her history of unusual pregnancies continued after three were confirmed while she had an IUD.
