Lily Allen Turned Down ‘Hundreds Of Thousands Of Bitcoin’ To Play Gig

Lily Allen was once offered 'hundreds of thousands of Bitcoin' to do a gig but turned it down. Ouch.

The 35-year-old popstar would now comfortably be a billionaire if she'd have taken up the offer as the cryptocurrency soared to an all-time high this week. Not much to 'Smile' about, eh, Lil?

Allen says she was offered the cash alternative to play a gig on the Second Life computer game, which would be streamed live, but decided against it.

She posted about the offer all the way back in 2014, writing on Twitter: "About 5 years ago someone asked me to stream a gig live on second life for hundreds of thousands of bitcoins, "as if" I said. #idiot #idiot."

Six years on from that tweet, Bitcoin has gone from strength to strength.

In fairness to Allen, at the time the Bitcoin would have been fairly worthless so it's not hard to see why she turned down the offer, but I bet that's cold comfort as its value shoots through the roof.

In fact, the singer is sure to be kicking herself all over again if she's seen the recent price of Bitcoin, which topped $43,000 (£31,415) yesterday.

The huge surge came after it was announced that Tesla had invested $1.5 billion (£1.1bn) in the cryptocurrency and was also accepting Bitcoin as a payment for its electric cars.

At least she's been lucky in love.

In filing at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Tesla said it had bought Bitcoin for 'more flexibility to further diversify and maximise returns on our cash'.

The filing added: "Moreover, we expect to begin accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment for our products in the near future, subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis, which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt."

The decision will make Tesla the first car manufacturer to accept Bitcoin as a payment.

The cryptocurrency's value soared to an all-time high of $43,730, according to Forbes.

Tesla boss Elon Musk recently called Bitcoin 'a good thing' but went on to say he reckoned he'd been 'late to the party'.

And, unlike Allen, the tech billionaire said he'd be happy to get paid in Bitcoin.

Musk made the comments responding to a tweet by Ben Mezrich, the author behind The Accidental Billionaires (which was adapted for cinema as the film The Social Network in 2010) and Bitcoin Billionaires.

Mezrich's tweet read: "I'm never turning down getting paid in bitcoin again."

To which Musk replied: "Me neither."
