In news that will likely catch the world of music off guard, Nicki Minaj has revealed that she's now retiring from music, apparently to focus on having a family.

The rapper, originally from Queens, announced her plans on Twitter, writing: "I've decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, in the box- cuz ain't nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE."

Minaj is all loved up with her fella Kenneth Petty, who she started seeing in December last year.

She's quite active on Twitter, often taking to the platform to give advice to her fans. On Sunday she offered up some words of wisdom about relationships and self-love, saying: "I first had to learn how to love MYSELF. if you wouldn't let a man treat your mother, your sister or best friend like that b/c you LOVE them, then you wouldn't let a man treat YOU like that b/c you love YOU."

It's not been easy going for Minaj and Petty, with controversy surrounding the pair. Most of it stems from Petty's past - the music executive was convicted of attempted rape when he was 16. He also served four years of a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in 2006.

According to eonline, Minaj has officially filed for a marriage licence from the Beverly Hills courthouse. The news outlet announced that she obtained it back in July - as that will have a validity period of 90 days, we can get ready for a mountain of speculation that the retirement could well start with a wedding.

Of course, it's not even 18 months since Minaj and fellow rapper Eminem had us all fooled about their relationship status. When rumours began to circulate about the pair dating, they both completely trolled the world.

Nicki responded to a fan's question on Instagram, asking if the pair were dating, to which she replied: "Yes."

Slim Shady also responded to Nicki's comment in the same social media post saying: "Girl you know it's true..."

Nicki then commented on that message (stay with us), saying: "Babe I thought we were gonna keep it on the low til the wedding. Yikes. I'll talk to you when I get home."

It turns out they played us all.
