Brad Pitt has spoken out about his symptoms living with potential prosopagnosia

Don't expect the Fight Club star to remember your face if you run into him on the street

As one of the most instantly recognisable actors on the planet, it's fair to say that most of us have a pretty good idea of what Brad Pitt's face looks like.

But if you ever cross paths with the actor, don't expect him to remember yours.

Considering that celebrities are likely meeting a fair amount of people every day, you'd expect them to struggle with remembering every person they interact with. But for the Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood star, his difficulties with remembering faces have led to him feeling 'ashamed' and worried that people get the wrong impression.

Known medically as prosopagnosia, the condition is a neurological disorder which makes it difficult for someone to remember faces.

According to the NHS, prosopagnosia is typically either developmental, which can be genetic, or acquired, which can happen to someone who's suffered from a brain injury.

The main symptom of prosopagnosia is a difficulty to remember a person's face. However, other symptoms can include recognising people's emotions or being able to tell a person's name or gender.

Although not officially diagnosed, Pitt opened up on how living with suspected prosopagnosia has impacted him back in 2022, telling GQ: "Nobody believes me!"

The actor previously revealed his plans to pursue a diagnosis during a 2013 interview with Esquire, which saw the Fight Club star admitting that a lot of people he meets get the wrong impression.

"So many people hate me because they think I'm disrespecting them," he explained. Pitt then went on to explain that he once attempted to be more honest and upfront about his issues remembering faces, only for it to backfire spectacularly.

"It just got worse. People were more offended," he admitted, adding that he's often mistaken for being 'conceited' or 'egotistical'.

"It's a mystery to me, man," he added. "I can't grasp a face, and yet I come from such a design/aesthetic point of view. I am going to get it tested."

Believed to impact anywhere between one in 33 and one in 50 people, prosopagnosia can make it harder for some to form relationships, which leads to a lot of people with the condition developing anxiety or depression as a result.

This is something which Pitt has also experienced, with the 61-year-old adding that he has avoided social situations in the past for this very reason.

"You meet so many damned people," he said. "And then you meet 'em again."

So if you ever find yourself in the unlikely scenario of frequently interacting with Brad Pitt, don't be offended if he doesn't recognise you.
