Robert De Niro admits he had a 'nice' time at Jennifer Lawrence's wedding dinner where she told him to 'go home'

He said he enjoyed himself while he was there

Robert De Niro said he had a good time showing up to one of the events for Jennifer Lawrence's wedding - even though she told him to 'go home'.

The movie star tied the knot with art gallerist Cooke Maroney in 2019, and if you've ever been married you'll know there's a hell of a lot of work that goes into putting the big day together.

One of these was the rehearsal dinner for the big day, and she was particularly worried about one of the guests: Robert De Niro.

Her co-star in the movies Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy, De Niro was at the rehearsal dinner but Lawrence was stressing out over whether he was OK.

As the founder of the feast and host of the evening it's kind of your responsibility to make sure everyone's having a good time, but she was worried that De Niro didn't really know anybody there.

Speaking on the Golden Globes red carpet she joked about why she decided to tell De Niro he could take off if he wanted to.

She joked: "It's so stressful. You're not having fun. You're just like, 'Is that person having fun?'

"I'll never forget - I was freaking out about the guests being cold, and all of my friends were lying they're like, ‘Nobody's cold, nobody's cold, everything's fine, everything's fine.'

"I looked over and I saw Bob, who doesn't know anybody and he's kind of wandering around, and I immediately was like, ‘No, this isn't what he wants to be doing. I don't want him here'.

"So I went over and whispered, I was like, ‘Go home' and he was nice - he like talked to my parents and was polite - but I was like, 'Go.' That just genuinely made me feel better."

However, it turns out she needn't have worried, as De Niro later told People he'd enjoyed himself, though he really didn't stay all that long.

He said: "I wasn’t... It was fine. I mean, I only came for that part of it anyway.

"It was nice! It wasn’t that long – maybe I stayed an hour, if that."

The pair of them are friends, and last year Lawrence revealed that she got De Niro a very special gift to welcome the birth of his seventh child.

What she got her acting chum was 'a baby nurse' so he could have a night off and get a decent bit of sleep.
