An award-winning prosthetics expert has hit back at claims from online creator Alexis Stone that they were wearing a ‘Jim Carrey’ mask in a recent awards appearance.

Carrey’s appearance is a rare one from the comedic actor, having 'retired' from Hollywood in 2022, only taking on occasional film roles such as the Sonic the Hedgehog sequels... cause he 'needed the money'.

The 64-year-old took to the stage at the Cesar Film Awards last month to accept the Honorary Cesar Award, however, his slightly different look sparked a bizarre online theory that he was a ‘clone’.

Makeup artist Stone took to Instagram yesterday (1 March), where they claimed to have impersonated the The Mask actor in Paris.

They showed a close-up picture of Carrey before sharing a photo of a mask, a wig, and fake teeth in a hotel in Paris.

Unfortunately, however, as with many things online these days, it appears this may not actually be true after all.

An expert in prosthetics and masks has spoken out, claiming the person who attended the Paris awards show was ‘100 percent’ Jim Carrey, pointing out aspects they believe completely debunk the conspiracies.

Key signs Jim Carrey was not Alexis Stone in a mask

Speaking exclusively to LADbible, David Malinowski explained the ‘obvious’ signs that it was actually Jim Carrey.

David said: “He is absolutely not wearing a mask. In my expert, professional opinion that’s 100 percent Jim Carrey and Jim Carrey is not wearing any prosthetics either.

“It’s not like he’s wearing them and someone else is saying it’s theirs, it's not Alexis claiming to be him and it's not Jim Carrey in prosthetics looking different.”

Malinowski is an Oscar-winning prosthetics artist, winning ‘Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling’ for The Darkest Hour, also winning a BAFTA.

He went on to add: “I mean, it's obviously really lifelike in the videos, but I mean, [if we’re talking about] Alexis, their face is just such a completely different structure to Jim's anyway even if you were to put that mask on.

He went on to add that he believes the image posted by Alexis Stone is AI generated, adding: “I don't know [if the image is 100% AI generated]. But I would say that is definitely AI generated because that mask looks nothing like the Jim Carrey at the award ceremony.

“I mean, the obvious signs to me, like those teeth that are there wouldn't even fit in anybody's mouth to even be underneath the prosthetic so it's just like ‘that would just never happen’.”

A prosthetic mask would not have lasted the entire ceremony

He went on to add: “That award ceremony, I don't know how long it went on for but for makeup to last all the way through that, to be perfect, it just really is impossible.

“When you start, you put makeup on in a bus sometimes or a trailer you put it on, it hopefully looks perfect when you leave the bus, but you can sometimes just walk to set and straight away you're having to tweak and maintain it, adjust the colour, there's an edge that's popping up.

“You know, the wig lace might be showing, all those kind of things… it's like a constant maintenance of makeup.

“So to almost suggest that he's put on makeup, he's gone into his wardrobe for several hours and his makeup has lasted all that time and not had to touch it up again… it’s just odd to me.”

He suggested that the posts ‘make a mockery out of what we really do’, also pointing out how difficult the situation must be for Jim Carrey, whose appearance is being heavily speculated on.

He said: “I just feel bad for the person involved, which happens to be Jim and his team and his family, because there’s been so much talk about it, all this is doing is bringing it up again.

“If there is something sensitive about it or he is sensitive about something that he’s possibly had done to him.”

The prosthetics expert went on to add that it would be ‘completely different’ if the reveal was real and it turned out Alexis had been pretending to be him, but finally said: “That is, in my opinion, 100 percent Jim Carrey, there's no one impersonating him. I just don't understand it really.”

'Left-handed' Jim Carrey clone theory also debunked

One of the earliest and most bizarre elements of this controversy was claims over the weekend that Carrey had been replaced by a clone because 'he is left-handed' and he'd been shown signing autographs with his right hand.

Several fans have posted this online, with many referencing Grok or other AI such as ChatGPT as proof that Carrey is left-handed. The issue is however that he is not left-handed and these people have fallen for a very common AI trick.

As AI is trained on human feedback people tend to prioritise algorithm's that are helpful and agreeable. This can at times lead to cases of AI Psychosis in which AI chatbots will agree with anything you say, even if it isn't based in fact.

If you ask ChatGPT 'is Jim Carrey left-handed' it will respond saying: "Yes — Jim Carrey is left-handed. He has mentioned being left-handed in interviews, and you can also notice it in behind-the-scenes clips and photos where he signs autographs or writes with his left hand."

If you ask ChatGPT 'is Jim Carrey right-handed' it will also respond saying: "Yes, Jim Carrey is right-handed. In interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, he’s typically seen writing and signing autographs with his right hand."

Several older pictures show Jim Carrey signing and writing with his right hand, so him signing an autograph with his right hand is not proof he's 'a clone' just because Grok said he's left-handed.

The idea that it wasn't really Jim Carrey has also been put to bed by a Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the Cesar Awards, who said that Carrey has been working on his speech for 'months'. He said: "Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation... He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance."
