Natasha Lyonne said she is 'doing a whole lot better' after relapsing at the start of the year.

The American Pie star, 46, has been open about her struggles with substance abuse throughout the early 2000s.

In 2001 she was arrested for DUI and checked into a rehab facility five years later at the age of 27 to treat heroin and alcohol addiction.

After nearly 10 years of sobriety, the Orange Is the New Black star wrote on X in January: "Took my relapse public more to come."

“Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you’re not alone. Grateful for love & smart feet.”

She added: “Gonna do it for baby Bambo," in reference to hockey player Sophie 'Bambo' Braverman, who will be the focus of one of her upcoming films.

In an update posted on Thursday (19 March), Natasha said she 'is doing a whole lot better and is back on her feet'.

"Want to thank our recovery communities & the fans who stood by & were so supportive," she wrote.

"Aiming to keep the journey somehow private, but look forward to sharing my experience, strength & hope as makes sense. My heart is with everyone ever going through it."

She continued: "Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you're not alone. Grateful for love & smart feet.

"Stay honest, folks. Sick as our secrets. If no one told ya today, I love you.

"No matter how far down the scales we have gone, we will see how our experience may help another. Keep going, kiddos.

"Don't quit before the miracle. Wallpaper your mind with love. Rest is all noise & baloney."

While promoting American Reunion in 2012, Natasha admitted that 'spiraling into addiction is really, really scary'.

"Some things have a very A-to-B scientific effect. Like, alcohol is a depressant. Cocaine is a stimulant. And then: Cocaine plus heroin is bad! That's the point of my story, that's the moral," she told Entertainment Weekly.

"I believe in comedy," Natasha - who played Natasha in three American Pie films - said.

"The cleaner I got, the funnier things got. Life became crisp, less muted.

"Though [going to the set] did have that feeling of 'Oh, God, what are they all going to look like? And how embarrassing—after what I've been through, I hope they don't search me on the way in.' And no one did! Everyone was really nice."
