Austin Butler takes on the role of The King in Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming biopic ‘Elvis’ coming out this summer.
The film will map the life and career of rock and roll icon Elvis Presley, from his early years in Memphis to his rise to stardom and legend certification, centring on the relationship between him and his manager Colonel Tom Parker.
Elvis will be available to watch in UK cinemas on 24 June 2022. Having first been announced in 2019, the release has seen multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the original date set in November 2021.
Those wishing to watch at home can do so just 45 days after the theatrical release, where Elvis will be streamed on HBO Max. For UK fans, however, no streaming service as of yet has been confirmed to carry the film.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Austin Butler leads the cast as Elvis Presley, alongside Tom Hanks portraying Presley’s infamous manager Colonel Tom Parker. Olivia DeJonge, recognizable from Netflix’s The Society, will play Elvis’ wife Priscilla Presley.
They will be joined by a horde of faces synonymous with Presley’s career, including Luke Bracey as Talent Manager Jerry Schilling, Patrick Sheare portraying DJ Dewey Phillips, and Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery appearing as producer Steve Binder.
Despite the full soundtrack not expected until this summer, fans have already heard snippets of some original songs performed by contemporary artists taking influence from Elvis’ catalogue.
On 6 May Doja Cat released the track ‘Vegas’, the first release from the soundtrack, which incorporates Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’, as well as the song’s original recording from Big Mama Thornton.
Making an appearance at the Finale of this year’s Eurovision song contest on Saturday, last year’s winners Måneskin debuted a snippet of an unreleased song from the soundtrack. The beginning of a cover of Presley’s ‘If I Can Dream’ followed the band’s performance of the band’s new single ‘Supermodel’.
Following much anticipation, a full trailer was finally released in February, opening with Parker’s first encounter with the young musician and Presley’s early performances on country music show Louisiana Hayride, before traversing his turbulent rise to fame and the wider events of the 1950s.
