The legend that is Tom Hardy has been pictured on set on the first day of shooting of the new Spider-Man spin-off film Venom, which is scheduled to open on October 5 2018. We can't wait for this.

The photograph, published by the film's Twitter feed earlier this morning, shows Hardy laughing and chatting with crew alongside the teasing comment of 'Day 1.' You can see the photo below and he seems to make anything look cool:

While it's far too early yet to see a shot of Hardy in action as the villain from the Marvel comic books, it's exciting to see proof that the star of The Dark Knight Rises is involved with the film.

The Venom film will be the first in several films set in Sony's new Spider-Man universe, which is being rebooted this year for the second time with Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Back in May, it was announced that Hardy will play Eddie Brock, a freelance photographer who is taken over by the sentient alien lifeform in Marvel's original Spider-Man comics. We all collectively got seriously excited by the prospect.

The character was previously played by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3, which was Tobey Maguire's last outing as Spider-Man in the original trilogy of Spider-Man films. We're pretty confident Tom will be better.

That film saw Brock sharing the role of villain with James Franco's New Goblin and Thomas Haden Church's Sandman.

However, Venom's sheer popularity as a nemesis for Spider-Man meant that it was always likely that he was going to be get his own film.

The shape-shifting lifeform is so popular that it was listed as #33 on Empire Magazine's 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters. Not bad.

The Venom film will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, the director who previously directed the cult smash Zombieland.

The script for Venom is being written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, who contributed to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Other actors confirmed to star in the Spider-Man spin-off are Riz Ahmed, star of last year's Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, and Michelle Williams, who starred in Brokeback Mountain as Alma, the wife of Heath Ledger's character, Del Mar.

After 10 long years out of the limelight, it's fantastic to see that Venom will be back to his beasty best.

Who better to portray him than Tom Hardy? We can't wait to see what Hardy will look like when he dons the famous black suit.
