Come on, Barbie, let's go party!

Barbie has just broken another box office record, this time beating a title that was previously held by Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

According to Variety, Greta Gerwig's film had the best-ever Monday performance at the box office for a Warner Bros. movie, raking in a massive $26 million.

This overtakes The Dark Knight's previous record of $24.6 million in 2008 (this figure has not been adjusted for inflation).

Heath Ledger wanted to work on another Batman movie.

Gerwig's smash hit stars Margot Robbie as the titular character who leaves Barbie Land and embarks on an adventure in The Real World.

It also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken, Michael Cera as Alan, and America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon and Will Ferrell.

Barbie also cracked the top 15 Mondays of all time without the help of a long weekend.

So far, the film has made $188 million at the US box office, and $194.3 million at the international box office, bringing its global box office earnings to $382 million.

And that's just within the first week.

Barbie has also had the biggest opening weekend of the year with $162 million, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $146 million opening weekend in April.

Barbie could easily wave to her friends in Barbie Land.

The film currently has a 90 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some of the world's most prolific movie critics singing its praises.

Christy Lemire from RogerErbert.com has called the film a 'dazzling achievement' and a 'visual feast', while Chandler Levack from Globe and Mail said it is 'both a master’s thesis on feminism and an Austin Powers-esque romp'.

Jane Crowther from Total Film said Barbie 'thinks right outside of the box' and Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times said its 'one of the smartest, funniest, sweetest, most insightful and just plain flat-out entertaining movies of the year'.

Alice Saville from Time Out wrote: "This is a wonderfully fun watch that somehow manages to simultaneously celebrate and satirise the Barbie brand, its feminism and girliness pairing like gorpcore sandals with a floaty pink skirt."

Variety's Peter Debruge added: "Gerwig has made the kind of family film she surely wishes had been available to her when she was a girl, sneaking a message (several of them, really) inside Barbie’s hollow hourglass figure.

"That’s an admirable achievement."

Barbie is showing in cinemas across Australia now.
