Fans think ‘free Netflix rival’ has ‘even better’ catalogue of films than streamer

A new rival to Netflix has launched in the UK this week, and according to some fans it may even top the streamer.

The ‘free Netflix rival’ in question is called Tubi – a Rupert Murdoch backed streaming service that is committed to free streaming of movies.

Whilst the idea of ‘Netflix but free’ is so enticing it may even sound fake, Tubi is clearly living up to the hype, with viewers stating that it may have an ‘even better’ catalogue than Netflix.

CEO Anjali Sud has stated that now is the ‘perfect time’ to bring Tubi to the UK, saying: “Tubi has spent the last decade honing our approach to vast, free and fun streaming in North America, and we feel that now is the perfect time to bring that recipe to UK audiences”.

One fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) by the name of Engwari clearly agreed, saying: “Tubi originals are kinda sus but their selection of acquired films? Excellent, varied and eclectic, you'd get further as a cinephile watching Tubi than a Netflix subscription tbh”.

A film fan by the name of Jada went even further, saying: “Tubi movie selection better than Netflix at this point”.

Another suggested Netflix may even have to up their game, saying: “One thing bout Tubi... they gon have the classics on here. Netflix take f*cking notes.”

Tubi’s selection focuses less on big budget originals and bringing a mix of classic and lesser known films to the streamer.

A quick glance of the film’s on the streamer reveals absolute classics.

As well as critical hits such as both Kill Bill films, Happy Gilmore, and Billy Elliot, it has cult classics such as theTwilight films, Yes, God, Yes, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Whilst they have less TV shows, the streamer does have a limited number of TV shows such as the Jack Whitehall and Charlotte Ritchie comedy Fresh Meat.

The streamer’s horror section has also received particular acclaim from fans.

One horror fan posted on Twitter to say: “UK horror fiends, Tubi just launched over here and I'm genuinely shocked how great their catalogue is!

“From classic to cult to excellent horror picks, there's something for everyone! Oh and it's FREE!!!”

The horror section is undeniably stacked for the streamer, and catered to the sickos amongst us.

The original Candyman is a standout, as well as a cult classic Happy Death Day, and even the controversial Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.

If you’re short a few quid and looking to cancel your Netflix subscription, it is looking like Tubi is the way to go.
