M Night Shyamalan's newest film is 'secret Sixth Sense sequel where he sleeps with ghosts' per wild theory
Sixth Sense is already pretty widely agreed to be the film with the wildest plot twist ever made, but M Night Shyamalan’s latest movie may just overtake this if the theories about it are to be believed.
Shyamalan and plot twists are a match made in heaven and the trailer for his newest film Remain on face value seems to have made the twist pretty obvious.
Released yesterday, 8 September, the trailer for the director’s newest film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor in what appears at first to be a straightforward romantic drama.
It becomes clear as the trailer progresses however that, as expected with an M Night movie, there is some sort of supernatural twist as Dynevor disappears and Gyllenhaal is left by himself questioning whether she’s real.

According to viewers on X however, the film is going to be a stealthy sequel to M Night Shyamalan’s classic, Sixth Sense, and this wouldn’t even be the first time the director has secretly done this.
The theory suggests that Gyllenhaal is playing a grown-up version of the kid from Sixth Sense and that he’s now getting busy with the ghosts
Watching through the trailer it seems pretty clear that Dynevor’s character is a ghost and that, whether it is due to the house he’s in being haunted or some supernatural ability, only Gyllenhaal appears to be seeing her.
In a viral post on X viewed by over 1.5 million people, one fan made the connection to Sixth Sense, saying: “Interesting... Calling it now the Shyamalan twist be that this is secretly a Sixth Sense sequel and Gyllenhaal is the kid grown up and now he's [sleeping with] the ghosts.”

Making a secret sequel to a film you released almost 30 years ago may sound wild, but it is not too diferent from something Shyamalan has done in the past.
M Night Shyamalan hid that Split was a secret sequel to Unbreakable until the mid-credits scene of the film, and ended up making a joint sequel to both movies
Split is arguably the director’s most successful and popular modern movie, but many won’t realise that it has a mid-credits scene they probably missed (considering it isn’t an MCU movie, so no one was likely expecting to have to hang around till the end).
The James McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy film ends with her escaping but McAvoy’s Kevin surviving, only for Bruce Willis to show up in the mid-credits to reprise his role from Unbreakable 16 years after the movie was first released.
This eventually led to a film Glass which was a sequel to both Split and Unbreakable.
This might make fans think that the director could be open to other sequels but unfortunately, despite how great an idea this is, he doesn’t sound too keen on the idea.
Speaking to Collider about Knock at the Cabin in 2023, Shyamalan said: “I enjoy originals too much. I have so many ideas I want to tell. It's just sad to go back. I'd rather challenge and start from scratch with you every single time and say, 'Here's a new idea with a new flavour.”
He stated that the Unbreakable trilogy was a pre-conceived idea and an exception to his rule. The idea for Remain was based on an idea he and Nicholas Sparks both had, with Sparks creating a book and Shyamalan creating the film. Whilst it’s not impossible they went different directions, the book Remain features no grown up versions of Haley Joel Osmont saying ‘I see dead people.”
One theory on X however is even wilder than the Sixth Sense sequel idea, replying to the viral tweet saying: “Given that it is written by Nicholas Sparks and made by Shyamalan, and the synopsis says Jake is mourning the death of his sister... I think that he's having a paranormalincestuous relationship.”
I for one will be routing for the secret Sixth Sense sequel and, more importantly, for there to be zero scenes of Jake Gyllenhaal getting freaky with his dead ghost sister.
