True meaning behind ‘Punisher Skull’ symbol worn by Jon Bernthal's character

The Punisher symbol was created for Marvel comics back in the 1970s but many have misconstrued its real meaning in recent years

It doesn't take much for a symbol to be co-opted for nefarious purposes, for its original meaning to be lost forever as a new, darker definition takes its place.

A similar fate has befallen the 'Punisher Skull', worn by Jon Bernthal's iconic Marvel character, Frank Castle.

The distinctive white skull is worn by Castle as he dons his black crime-fighting armour and takes on the role of The Punisher. The ultra-violence character was introduced in Marvel comics all the way back in 1974, originally as an adversary of Spider-Man.

Hollywood royalty Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson have all portrayed the anti-hero in blockbuster films in the years since, but it was Bernthal's performance as the character that skyrocketed its popularity.

The Wolf of Wall Street star first appeared as Castle in the second season of Netflix's Daredevil series in 2016, but he soon earned his own spin-off after captivating fans with his brutal and enthralling display.

Having starred in Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal will reprise his role twice this year in The Punisher: One Last Kill and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, appearances that may see another increase in 'Punisher Skull' sightings.

Castle is a gun-wielding vigilante who isn't afraid to kill his enemies when a typical Superhero usually opts for non-lethal apprehension, and though the character often explores themes of trauma and post-traumatic stress, his no-nonsense attitude to crime has seen his logo adopted by some far-right movements.

So much so that Marvel retired the logo permanently in 2022 due to continued controversy.

After members of the US military, most famously the American Sniper Chris Kyle, wore the logo, some US police members began to use the insignia as well. It was spotted on law enforcement officers at Black Lives Matter protests following George Floyd’s death in 2020.

Yet, George Conway, who created the Punisher, revealed the true meaning of the logo. He told Forbes in 2020: “The Punisher is representative of the failure of law and order to address the concerns of people who feel abandoned by the legal system.

“It always struck me as stupid and ironic that members of the police are embracing what is fundamentally an outlaw symbol.”

Why American Sniper Chris Kyle wore the Punisher skull

Chris Kyle was played by Bradley Cooper in the 2014 movie American Sniper and is considered 'the most lethal sniper in US military history.'

He was also known for wearing the Punisher logo, typically on a black cap, after his SEAL Team-3 adopted the symbol in Iraq.

Kyle explained why he was drawn to the logo in his autobiography, writing: “We called ourselves the Punishers. He’s a real bad a** who rights wrongs, delivering vigilante justice. A movie by the same name had just come out; the Punisher wore a shirt with a stylised white skull.

“We all thought what the Punisher did was cool: He righted wrongs. He killed bad guys. He made wrongdoers fear him. That’s what we were all about. So we adapted his symbol - a skull - and made it our own, with some modifications.

“We spray-painted it on our Hummers and body armour, and our helmets and all our guns. And we spray-painted it on every building or wall we could.

“We wanted people to know, we’re here and we want to f**k with you.”
