Ever since The Dark Knight Rises released it has been fairly undeniable that the most iconic and memorable part of the film is Tom Hardy’s voice as Bane.
Whilst Christian Bale’s last outing has a number of memorable moments that have stayed with moviegoers, Tom Hardy’s raspy echo-y Bane voice has stood the test of time.
Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy concluded over 13 years ago, seeing Batman take on Tom Hardy’s terrifying Bane, a revolutionary cast out from the League of Shadows who breaks Bruce Wayne in half.

Hardy’s scene stealing voice has led to numerous imitations and is covered by a mask for much of the film, leading fans to be shocked when a new video showed the actor performing the accent without the mask and explaining how he did it.
The video in question is a WIRED feature in which Hardy, alongside Andy Serkis, answered some of the internet’s most asked questions.

Though it was initially released three years ago as part of the press for the second Venom film, many fans are only just discovering the clip and posted it to X.
They posted the clip, saying: “Tom Hardy finally revealing where he got the Bane voice for The Dark Knight Rises.

“Wild to see him do it without the mask on.”
In the clip, Hardy speaks about the fact that, traditionally in the comics, Bane is a Latinx person.
Admitting that he was not this he said he ‘looked at the concept of Latin’ and found out about a man by the name of Bartley Gorman.
Gorman, who died in 2002, was a Romani-Gypsy bare knuckle-boxer who referred to himself as ‘The King of the Gypsies’ several decades prior to Tyson Fury.
He recounted speaking to Christopher Nolan and showing him footage of Gorman speaking, saying that they can either go a more traditional ‘Arch-Darth Vader route for the character’ or follow this and respect the roots of the character.
He recalled how Nolan simply told him: “I think we’ll go with it.”

In a later interview, Hardy was asked if there were any lines people specifically asked him to do, to which he said that the most common request is for him to do the Bane voice.
Speaking to Huffington Post, he said: “I take great pride in saying no.”

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter at the time of the film’s release, Hardy admitted that the voice was at times hard to understand, saying: “(Bane’s) particular accent was very specific, which was a gypsy accent.
“So that’s why it was difficult to understand. But once you tune into it, you get it. I hope.”

He stated that he wanted to tap into Bane not as a Latino man but a Romani Latino man, hence the voice in question.
Whatever your opinion on it, however, the voice is undeniably iconic.
The Dark Knight Rises is available to watch on Prime Video.
