It's not at all uncommon for both games and movies to link their IPs together, whether that be in a grandiose fashion, such as Marvel, or in a more subtle way, with a gentle nod.
The latest trailer for GTA 6 has raised exactly that question, since a Reddit user noticed a connection between Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 6 in the recent trailer.
In their post, the user pointed out that the money being used in the club depicts the same presidents that can be seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, on the collectable cigarette cards.
A glimpse of RDR2 can be seen in GTA 6's trailer (Rockstar) If you look carefully at the notes, you can see Thaddeus Waxman and Franklin Hardin.
This a clear connection to Red Dead Redemption 2.
The presidents are the same in the GTA money and Red Dead Redemption cigarette cards (Rockstar) It's a clever tie in (Rockstar) Does this mean the games are connected?
GTA fans are now wondering what this means for both GTA and Red Dead Redemption. Are the games connected? Is this merely an Easter egg? Or is there some other hidden meaning to this?
Sadly, there's no real way to tell yet. No other connections between the two games have been picked up on, besides the fact they're both made by Rockstar, who has never mentioned any connections between them.
Although fans have suggested this might mean that the games are based in the same universe, there are a few details which could suggest otherwise, hinting towards it simply being an Easter egg.
In Grand Theft Auto games, New York City is referred to as Liberty City, whereas, in Red Dead Redemption 2, it's known by its real name, with Arthur Morgan actually showing his distaste for the city.
There is a chance that all this time Liberty City is just a fictional city, and that New York does exist in GTA.
Then again, Saint Denis from Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't real either. It's a fictional town based on New Orleans.
Both games have a mix of real, and fictional locations, making it hard to work out if there is actually a connection or not.
Some Reddit users have suggested that the names of cities might have been changed in the years since Arthur Morgan and his gang and the event of GTA.
RDR2 uses real city names whereas GTA 6 doesn't (Rockstar) In this theory, what was New York would eventually be renamed Liberty City, and in the case of GTA 6, Miami would have become Vice City.
While I can see where they're coming from, it seems a little far-fetched, and much more likely that the developers are showing some appreciation for one of the company's other IPs.
