A group of children got to spend time with Willy Wonka himself when Johnny Depp went to visit a Birmingham curry house for an expensive meal out.

Depp was accompanied by guitarist Jeff Back and a large group of other customers at Varanasi restaurant on Sunday (5 June), where they went to enjoy a meal amid Beck's ongoing UK tour, on which Depp has made a number of appearances.

Staff at the restaurant had been alerted to Depp's plans to visit earlier that day and so allowed the group to have the place to themselves, with operations director Mohammed Hussain telling the MailOnline they were 'concerned that [Depp] might be bothered by other diners'.

The actor didn't seem fazed by attention though, and in fact made sure to engage in conversation with people at the restaurant despite the fact they were strangers to him.

Footage from the evening shows Depp greeting staff members as well as their friends and families, including some young children who appeared to be over the moon to be introduced to the actor.

Depp bent down to give one girl a hug and spent a few moments chatting with the youngster as she grinned up at him in awe.

Hussain said Depp met all three of his daughters, who made the actor 'give them a few one-liners from his movies'.

"He did ‘you’re weird’ from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Hussain said, adding: "He was really good with the children, but there was about 60 of us there and he didn’t leave one person without hugging or kissing them, or shaking their hand."

Hussain previously said the group racked up a five-figure bill through their food and drink orders, but money didn't appear to be an issue as they 'never even looked at the bill'.

A spokesperson for Varanasi restaurant told ITV News it was an 'absolute pleasure' to host Depp and Beck for the evening, describing their appearance as a 'once-in-a-lifetime experience'.

Speaking to the publication, Hussain added: "Johnny Depp and his team were absolutely delighted with the food that we served them and enjoyed our company to the point that he took a takeaway back to the hotel room!"

Depp is also said to have given a 'large tip' to the staffers after tucking into the meal that consisted of a variety of curries as well as big portions of rice and naan breads.
