One of the stars from The Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise believes it's time for Johnny Depp to come back.

The actor's character Captain Jack Sparrow was famously dumped from the film saga after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, spoke about their abusive and toxic marriage.

However, Kevin McNally reckons Depp should be recast into the storyline of Disney's epic moneymaker.

McNally, who played Mr Gibbs, Captain Jack's best crewmate across the five Disney films, told the Daily Express: "I've never seen a hint of any dark side to Johnny.

"I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being. I don't see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow.

"I think there was a general feeling that without Jack there is no Pirates franchise. And there's probably a lot of truth in that.

"But now there have been questions about that, certainly why not have other Pirate films and certainly then why not have Jack back or Jack playing a different part."

The upcoming sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film will have a mainly female-led cast and will go in a different direction to the previous ones now that they don't have Captain Jack.

Depp being dumped from the franchise was confirmed in 2018, with Disney's production chief, Sean Bailey, explaining how they wanted to 'bring in a new energy and vitality' to the series.

The actor came under the spotlight in 2016 after Amber Heard claimed he domestically abused her. Depp denied the allegations and the case was settled in the same year.

However, a new case arose four years later when Johnny Depp launched a libel case against The Sun newspaper and executive editor Dan Wootton.

The case centred on whether an article published in newspaper, where Depp was called a 'wife beater', was libellous.

Depp argued the case had been aggravated by his name being included alongside that of convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein, as well as the fact The Sun retained the article on its website.

The truth of the matter was decided on the balance of probabilities, a lower standard than required in a criminal case.

The case shot to worldwide attention during a three week courtroom battle in July last year at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Depp eventually lost that case and, despite launching an appeal, was denied the right to have the case heard again in court.

Following that, he was dumped from the third Fantastic Beasts film and was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

Johnny Depp sounds like he has resigned himself to never playing Captain Jack on the big screen again.

Speaking at the San Sebastian Film Festival earlier this year, he said: "The beauty of Captain Jack Sparrow for me is that I can travel with Captain Jack in a box, literally Captain Jack in a box, and when the opportunity is right I'm able to go and visit people and places where the smiles and the laughs and the things that are important, the most important things in the world, are on the line.

"So I still travel with Captain Jack and if I have the opportunity, whenever I do, I will go to these places. I'll go to somebody's house - man, I'll perform at your kid's birthday party at this point!"
