Mindhunter season three latest news as soundtrack writer 'hopeful' for future

No matter how long it's been, fans long for a third outing of the FBI detective thriller

Mindhunter season three rumours and chatter never go away.

We're now in to the fifth year since the second season was released, and the TV show's Reddit page is still full of comments such as 'Mindhunter is my Roman Empire'.

OK, quick recap. Mindhunter follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), along with psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), in the agency's newly formed Behavioral Science Unit (BSU).

It follows them interviewing what we now describe as serial killers, following the real life investigations by the BSU into notorious criminals such as Ed Kemper and Charles Mason.

The story is based John E. Douglas' book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit and it mirrors many real world elements from Douglas' 25 year career in the intelligence security service.

Two seasons of the show ran, 2017 and 2019, with both receiving critical acclaim.

It led to viewers naturally thinking a third would be on the way, especially when the second ended with a tease of things to come.

But nothing has ever been announced. The show ended up being mothballed.

And then in a sucker punch, it was later officially cancelled by Netflix after the costs got too high and the viewers didn't increase alongside it, such is the nature of modern streaming platforms.

Fans of the show are clinging on to hope it may be revived some day with the revival of other TV shows giving them hope, despite the now four and a bit years since season two.

Earlier this month, Holt McCallany sent the fanbase back into meltdown when he mentioned showrunner David Fincher was looking at ways to bring it back.

It sent the 70,000-strong army behind the show's Reddit page into action, with them picking up on anything and everything that could be a hint.

Among them was a post last week from Mindhunter composer Jason Hill, who has worked on a number of Fincher projects including Love, Death & Robots and Gone Girl.

Posting to Instagram, Hill added a picture to his stories of a large, framed Mindhunter poster with his atmospheric music from the show playing over the top.

Naturally fans were asking what this meant in relation to the show.

So, LADbible asked Hill about the set up.

Sadly for fans, it was just an homage to the great show that he was involved in rather than a 'coy' or subtle hint of things to come.

But he is fully behind a third season of Mindhunter and 'hopes' Fincher 'brings it back'.

Responding to the post, Hill told LADbible: "I’ve got nothing new to share on the Mindhunter front.

Season two even featured Charles Manson.

"Sorry to say, not out of coyness but out of not hearing anything about a new season.

"My post was merely because I recently got that big poster framed, and was setting up my office after renting that space out to another composer for a while I was taking it back, and having made the music for Mindhunter.

"I do love the show and hope DF [David Fincher] brings it back!"
